Buying new computer...HP or Dell.

I'm looking to buy a new laptop (mine is 5yrs), and HP or Dell seem to be my options...I need memory, anyone have one of these? Both Best Buy and Office Max have them on sale for 379.00, and with everything will be about 540.00, sounds good to me.

Look for refurbished Dell laptops at much lower prices. Some even have Windows 7, which is great!!!
Just search "refurbished Dell laptop" and you will be amazed. Most come with free basic Word and Excel, so no upfront software costs to add.

Never buy ‘refurbished’ electronics. You have no idea what you are getting.

PCs are so cheap these days they have become disposable items - the cost repairing them is almost as much as buying a new machine.
I prefer HP because you can get off brand things for it. Dell is proprietary OEM only.
I've been looking at both, and dell has more memory and is faster for less $ while HP gives only 4 memory for same price.
I did see refurbished online at both Office Max and Best Buy where I have a charge and rewards card, better deal for me, with no % for 6 months. Office Max transfers your stuff for 30.00 less. Weighing it all, trying to make a good choice.....

I bought an HP touch screen last year, running Windows 10. No troubles so far, like you I was deciding between HP and Dell.
Where did you get it, was it new or refurbished? How is windows 10?

It was new at Walmart, it is an HP notebook. I have had very little trouble with 10. It does try to anticipate my actions, which can get odd. It will sometimes decide I am ready to close a program because my cursor is over that function. I have learned to take my fingers off. lol. I think it was mid to upper threes, not sure anymore. It has a 1 TB hard drive and 6th gen. Intel core.
I like Toshiba, I got mine from Best Buy about 6 years ago and it's still going strong, but I basically only use it when I travel or when I am doing hotel shops, etc. I use my HP desktop primarily when I am in town.
Jas, I have a Toshiba from Best Buy (5years) did you know their out of business, someone bought them.
My keys are sticking for ages, that's the only reason I need a new one, the computer itself is fine.

That stinks. Why are they sticking? Did you spill something on the keyboard? Is it something that can be fixed, because if the computer itself is good, why not just fix the keyboard?
I use the computer in my T.V. room off the kitchen, so while I'm working/playing, i'm eating.....not careful.
My laptop guy gave me a loaner keyboard , but it's a hassle ......works when doing reports. Every two words i mis a letter (like tht).......the keyboard can't be taken out, very costly i did check it out...he said not worth it.

best decision i ever made... a month ago i got from ebay $80 for a used laptop preinstalled with ubuntu an open source operating system... not going to have to pay for windows or anything else ever again... word free... antivirus free...

very easy to use just google what you want and it will tell you how to install it... most can be done by using just a basic wordsearch using the software platform

most computer are windows or mac and as such most criminals are targeting those systems... they have no desire to go after smaller less marketed systems... according to some windows will soon be going to a subscription based service.. plus right now it is insane about the updates and running slower than a babies crawl... windows 10 is one heck of a memory drain

works great online and the word platform is as easy as Word is... simple copy and paste

I bought Lenovo from Lenovo. You might check HP and Dell websites to buy directly from the mfg. I also wanted to use Win 7 and had that installed with option to upgrade if and when I choose. I also went on eBay and bought MS Office 2003 because I like the picture manager program that came with that app - cost was $65.
I have used both. I do not make a recommendation here because the others have told you so much about their experiences and how to obtain additional information. Has anyone mentioned two websites known as 'insane down' and Major Geeks'? These sites contain abundant information about everything you've heard about and, possibly, a few tech things you have not heard about. My preferences relate to operating systems and the computers themselves. I want a large screen on a lightweight computer base. I am tired of sleek surfaces and off-balance laptops that slip and slide and occasionally slide right off of lap or out of hand. Do I really have to work at a desk or wear grippy gloves just to keep my laptop from sliding away?!? Can't someone put a skid-proof substance on the laptops? These would be similar to (or exactly like) the little sticky things that people put in their showers and bathtubs. Well, maybe we should demand a discount on the price of laptops so that we can afford these types of fixes. I love the information about operating systems. Just when we have become whizzes in using the operating systems, those will change. We can adapt to something else. Fortunately, we can customize our laptops to a great extent.

I've never heard of the sites you mention, bu will check it out....my laptop is 15 inches and I want that but lighter.
My problem is I don't want explorer 10, very happy with 7,but that will be outdated soon and I need 8gb, 4 which they all seem to have isn't nearly enough memory..those are the two things I know. Taking my time and can't decide if I want a new or refurbished.

Dell makes a better laptop HP uses a power component which they know overheats but have not fixed this issue as yet. I've had everything including both Dell and HP I'd never buy another HP Dell is very good. Asus is something I'd consider before either if you want a machine that will last without becoming out dated Solid state drive if possible is much more stable and far less likely to fail. Unfortunately you are stuck in the Windows 10 OS unless you want to go Apple which is quite the price difference or use a Linux based system. I hope that helps.
YES, that helps, glad I waited and am doing my homework...My delay is I don't want Windows 10 but not going to Apple I have a Toshiba with no problem except sticking keys but now it's running slow and doing stuff it shouldn't be doing five years old and I use it way too much. I would get Asus or many here suggest a refurbished...but they don't seem to have enough memory.

Update.....I ended up getting an HP from Best Buy, they had a good sale, and I didn't want a used one. I'm re-putting my passwords in (ugh). This has 8GB, so I'll grow into it, not out of it. This is Windows 10, so far notice no difference. They gave 6 months free security, and since I have an account at BB, I got either cash back, or no interest for a year. I'd rather spend a bit more, and have the warranty. By the way, I was told from both Office Max and Best buy there are many problems with Asus, and Office Max stopped carrying them, so beware.
My due diligence leads me to believe, both Dell and HP are equal.

I have had very little problems with my HP. Some "sticking keys" but they replaced the keyboard quickly. I think there was a one-year warranty? I also have a Mac but have not used it since I got the HP. Just an easier platform for me to navigate and it made mystery shopping much easier. I think you made the right decision.
Playing with it and getting familiar, and like it, very quick, keys are easy to use. I as well think I made the right decision.

I think you should not go with refurbished laptop you should only go with a new one, because refurbished one can create a lot of problems in future. The price is looking good, you can check out for some cheaper price also. Deliveries became fast now a days as courier dispatch software is being used by most of the companies.

I am in heaven, whenever I make a typing mistake, it self corrects...that alone would be reason to get it, love the upgrades, so glad I didn't get a refurbished. Getting notifications wherever I am on computer, so when something of importance comes in, I know about it.....I recommend HP. and windows 10.

I have a Toshiba lap top and have windows 7, no problems. My desk top is H.P. which my husband uses, works fine. I do like my Toshiba better.
I have Comcast/Xfinity and they just updated my modem, I rent it from them so it is free and under warranty for as long as I rent it. The new one I just set-up is twice the speed and works great. I pay $10 a month, worth it to me, covers all computers in your house.
I loved my Toshiba and used it too death, however, you may know they no longer make computer, T.V's yes, so hard to get parts for it....I love the updates on my windows 10, does so much more than old one...auto spelling correct (love that), and notifications on new emails and so much faster. I just have this one computer and making an appt. with the Geeks (no charge) helped to set it up.
