Should Bullying Be a Crime?

Do we need to disarm bullies and re-train them to function with respect, awareness, or other appropriteness? Could they survive without their non-gun weapons?

Criminal Harassment is already a crime in most, if not all states. Bullying would fall under these existing statutes.
Teenagers have committed suicide from being bullied...of course it's a crime...many states like Fla have strict laws against bullying. Hoping your not referring to anyone on this forum, you were very vague as LIJake stated.

There are all sorts of laws on the books regarding harassment, intimidation and stalking.

We have to be careful, however, as to how we define what sort of behaviors should/should not be permitted verbally. There is a fine line between "bullying speech" and "critical speech" at times. We do need to protect our First Amendment Rights and should be wary of any attempt to limit them - even if the intent is good.

Hard work builds character and homework is good for your soul.
My view is protecting our first Amendment/freedom of speech is one thing and should always be respected, however, bullying, stalking, needs to be stopped and those doing it educated...it is never o.k. to bully with intent
to hurt. Shows what an unhappy angry person the bully is and is dangerous. There is a line between humor and bullying, it is an obvious line.

Snowflake has nothing to do with race and everything to do with people who are easily offended. See [www.urbandictionary.com]

I'm not in favor of banning any speech (except, of course, incitement to riot, yelling "fire" in a crowded theater, etc.) The reason we have free speech in this country is so that we may express ourselves. They're words. Some people need to grow thicker skin.

If you're interested in seeing this in action, try [gab.ai]. It's a free speech platform - that means people speak freely, even if they are outrageously offensive (you just mute those ones.) It's interesting to watch, regardless of your worldview.

Just about any word can be positive or negative depending upon the situation and who is saying it. They're words. Some people need to just get over it. It's when words develop into criminal ACTION that is a problem. Concentrate on the deeds, not the rhetoric.

Big thanks to all! I looked up 'Criminal Harassment' and found much more information than by searching for mental health issues that may be present in bullies. We-- everyone who might be a responsible-style adult or kid-- might do a little life check-up and find out if we are hurting other people, even unintentionally. We might not know if something was misstated or misheard. We might not know if we are operating in a gossip chain and doing harm that way. We might not know if we said a wrongful or hurtful thing-- such as repeating a line or action from an entertainment piece which happens to be unknown to or frowned upon by our victim. We might be busy in life, operating in our usual niceness and decency, and overlook some offense which matters to someone else. I am not suggesting that anyone in this forum has an intention to harm anyone.

Legally, our intentions are important. What we intend or do not intend may determine the outcome of legal cases and keep us free or get us some punishment. Practically, victims might not care about what was intended. The harm was done, and damage must be rectified. Is suicide that is fed by bullying a rectification? Is a kid who is threatening or completing suicide a little like Mordecai who tore his clothing in hopes of drawing attention to Haman and that tyranny? Mordecai had no other recourse in his world, except to draw attention to tyranny and impending death, in hopes that someone in authority would "get it" and make a change. (Haman, trusted by the King, had the power and the audacity to dare to attempt to force Mordecai, uncle of the Queen and essentially a 'Snowflake', to give up faith, religion, and self-identity and bow to Haman. To spoil the story, Haman did not win.) Is kid-produced murder (such as school shootings) a rectification, or (in kids' minds) the prevention/reduction of future possible acts of bullying or harassment in the places where no other recourse is perceived or effective?

n our time, there may not be any Esthers who will risk their lives to speak to kings and free the Mordecais of the society. However, there are resources for still-alive victims of bullying and harassment. There are grief and suicide support groups for the survivors of other victims.

Do we want to live in a world where such resources are needed as much as they are needed?

Most important, each of has an opportunity to prioritize. What is the most important thing that we can do about ourselves? (My most important thing today is to take care of the home front and family. We have to get ready to return to the job that was on hiatus. This requires some planning and preparation, so that we can get enough sleep and work additional hours. What is your most important thing to do?)

Answering above's question, my most important thing is a Dr.'s appointment getting blood and other lab work done. Worried and hoping for no news which is good news. They found blood in urine, so.....

I'm too busy living and working to navel-gaze and reflect whether I am unintentionally hurting someone because they are offended by something I say or by something I post with which they disagree. Those who are so easily offended ought to buckle up, buttercup or restrict their contact with the world to an echo chamber with those who hold the exact same views they do.

Irene, I hope your doctor's appointment goes well.

I have no pity for kids who bully because my child was the pick on kid at school , the things I found out they did to my son should get people in big trouble with the law. The kids at school who bully should not be the own one hhold accountable schhol leaders who do nothing should be too. When I now the teachers and the other leaders what was going on , they answer was we can not be in every place all the time which I unsederstand but if you are made awe there is a problem you need to look after the kid.
Do these collide?

This forum is full of all different religions and many with none.....let's not shove yours upon the rest, speaking to above poster who seems to do this more often than not. I respect your right, please respect mine., there is more than one religion. Religion and Politics should remain private, no preaching please.
