Facebook Messenger for Windows 7 questions

My closest friend is in England. We chat very often via an app tat with cease to operate later in July. He suggests using Facebook Messenger since they use it to chat with family members there.

BUT, when I search for FB Messenger for Windows &, all of the sources to down load it come from other than directly from the FB source that has the version for Windows 10. Does anyone know if the Win 10 version will woork smoothly with Win & ?? Alternatively, what download source would you consider safe to use to get a version that is for Win &.

NO I am NOT giving up my Win 7 Professional. End of story.

Do you want to use Messenger or your phone or tablet? I have the app on my phone, but primarily use it through FB.

When you access FB, messenger should already be there. I'm on my home page right now. Along the right side is a list of friends. I can click on the name and start a conversation. It is not a complete list, but includes those online right now. As an alternative I can access Messenger on the upper left of the page, directly under News Feed.

Wales, I have used windows 7 and now have 10, they work the same way on Facebook. There is a PM (private message), with the friends you put in it. I PM often and it is private, with friends/family answering back with no problem. This keeps me in touch with my favorite people..even family in Mexico city.....search it out, maybe have a friend show you how to set it up. I'm by no means a techie, and it's not hard to figure out. Sort of like our PM.

You can just use Facebook Messenger on the website when you're logged in. Just be sure Flash is enabled and there are not lock downs due to your firewall. Also, enable permissions to allow Facebook for your mic and webcam. For my work laptop that's on Windows 7 Professional, I use Chrome.

I don't have my mic or webcam enabled for FB, or any other website for that matter. I still use Messenger.

Didn't read closely. Enable the mic and webcam if you intend to use it like you would for video calls. You're right though; not needed if you're intending to just chat via text.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't know using it like video calls was possible. To keep life simple, I disabled any website, app or program from using either when installing my new hard drive. I like to be able to decide when and if they will be enabled. Same with location services on all my devices.

Facebook is surprisingly user-friendly for easily communicating with those with devices of different platforms without much explanation. E.g. I video chat with my parents easily with my Windows computer or iPhone, while they use their Android tablets or Windows laptop. Nothing too technical for them and painless to teach them too since they're not the most tech-savvy.

I skype with daughter and got a new phone for that, but like my computer best. Have never used Facebook for video, just keep up with relatives, and was able to see my sister's first grandchild through Facebook, very nice.
Being so disconnected from family (location wise) keeps you in touch...also a place in case of fires or disasters, you can put SAFE, and everyone in the world knows your o.k. I also play games on Facebook, and follow my daughters adventures in travel and use her links to hear her work lectures and follow her closely...love my Facebook.
