WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF......

They opened a new T.J.Max near me, so I went in to take a look (not a shop). I find a cute sweater for $9.00, go to buy it and the Cashier rings up 65.00. Thank Goodness I checked and tell her, she looked embarrassed and
credited me, then she says, I'm also going to credit the 9.00 for the sweater...WHAT? I didn't believe her, get home and checked and yes, I wasn't charged for the sweater. I think the store (chain) should train or at least teach newbies how to use the register......has this happened to anyone? I'm not returning it, so there.....

WOW! That's awesome, Irene!! You done good, girl!! No need to return it....they're probably hoping that they may just have made a regular customer of you, so it's probably worth it to them in the long run.
Actually many places have a policy that the piece is free if the wrong price is initially charged. The major grocery chain in my area does. And it really pays to check your sales receipt before departing the store.

That's true, wales! There's a grocery chain in my area that will give you one free of an item if it rings up wrong. But I never thought about retail stores having that policy...I'll have to be on the lookout now!!
@Wales...I didn't know that, and at Ralphs when I bought a snapple (.99), they charged me 4.99 for the 4 pack.
I got home and checked (I thought the bill was higher than it should be). I returned it and got my money back, but nothing free. I now check everything.

A quick Google search resulted in some hits about pricing errors when scanning. Some of what I found involved a voluntary program. Retailers in the program will honor the lower price when the scanner is wrong and the item is free if it should be priced under $10. The scanner and bar codes means the cashier has no control over how the item is rung, just how to handle the situation when there is an error. It sounds like your cashier was probably following company policy.

I went grocery shopping at a regional market a few years back. When I got home and put the groceries away, some coupons were left on the meat packages. I checked my receipt, and most of the sale/coupon items were rung up incorrectly.

They fixed the problem, but that was the last time I was in that store.
