Look What The Snow/Ice Did To Our Awning In Upstate of South Carolina!!

We got about 5 inches of snow last night/this morning, along with an additional 1" of pure ICE on top of it. Well, about 10:15 this morning, hubby & I heard a loud CRASH on our back deck! Well, our AWNING COLLAPSED into a V-shape mass and fell on our deck! We can't even open our back door more than about 1/4 of an inch, because of how it collapsed. FORTUNATELY, the RAILINGS of the deck prevented the awning from collapsing directly onto the floor of the deck. That would have been problematic because the deck probably would have collapsed, and broken the pipe under the deck that goes to the outside spigot! But...that didn't happen. But on the OTHER side of the deck, a piece of the awning came OVER onto the post that holds the electric meter!! That piece of awning ended up propping itself up on the post that holds the electric meter! Fortunately, all our wiring is underground, so there's no danger of having the wires cut. But it looks awfully close to the meter, so hubby found a plank and added some extra propping under the awning. I called the insurance company and started a claim, but they won't be sending an adjuster out until Friday!! I'm hoping something can be done sooner than that...someone will call us tomorrow. I also texted our electrician and sent him the photo of the meter box with the plank for extra propping. He said he believes that will hold up fine, especially since the deck railings are basically holding up the awning. Bless his heart, he said if he can get out tomorrow, he will come by and look at it just to make sure it's OK. But he said since our wiring is underground, it should be fine. But it's still been UNNERVING!!! Just wanted to share!

Thanks, Ark! Crazy thing is, LOTS & LOTS of people around us have lost their power, but so far, our street has kept the power on all day. We were afraid that, even though our wiring is underground, we could feel a "domino" effect of others losing their power, and the grid affecting us. But so far, we are OK. Of course, we have tonight to get through with the wind and cold!
Let's hope that power stays on! I went and got a Kerosene heater just in case we get bad weather here. We already got snow about three weeks ago. I think we all are in for a bad winter. The only thing I have fiber optic here is my cable and internet. The rest are above ground.

WOW! Thank goodness everyone is okay, and the damage was mostly cosmetic.

About 8 years ago we had a similar situation with snow & ice. The weight of it pulled two 75' pecan trees down into my parents' attic, and anyone who did have above ground wiring *didn't* anymore...the ice weight pulled all the wires down and ripped the meters right off of the houses.

I'm glad you are safe and warm.
