This has been discussed several times in the last few years in the context of mailing items to charities. Yes, it has happened before. Given all of the craziness with people mailing bombs, viruses, etc. in the past few years, many organizations including charities have grown very suspicious about packages from unknown senders. Charities also often have to pay to get rid of the packaging, so a large box full of plastic peanuts might easily cost more to dispose of than the value of the can of cat food (for instance) that people are sending them.

A charity that I mail packages to called the police in my town to find out why i was sending packages to them with one small item that was worth less than the postage.

I’ve mailed a 1 pound bag of rice to homeless shelters off and on for the last 3 years without any issues. I do include a little note that I enclosed a small food donation for their shelter to help or for them to give out to someone in need.. I also just use a plain yellow envelope the same size as the rice package so no packing material, peanuts etc are used.
That is so sad. They could just make a policy not to open packages from your return address if they are concerned about contamination or whatever. Why make it your problem? Calling the police on anything odd without considering real risk is just conformist nonsense.
I can understand it to a point. I felt less this way about the hicks who chased me for taking pictures of their Walmart gas station.

I volunteer at the food bank at my church. It would help if you put "donation" on the label, so the recipient knows where it should go. Calling or emailing the shelter won't help because the volunteers may not relay the message to the correct people.

They have to be very aware of mail coming in with all the bombs, dust powder and such....can't really blame them. I don't do those jobs, if I did, I'd add a donation and try and get it back from the MSC.

I am curious. Why do you think the MSC would reimburse you for the donation? 1) There are plenty of shoppers who rush to do this shop. 2) Nowhere in the guidelines for the shop is there even a hint that they will reimburse for anything other than the shipping cost and the cost of the box. Even when they (years ago) required an oversized box and shipment to specified non-profits, they did not reimburse for the cost of the donation.
