Fine Timing.

Took our '02 Impala, the one that saw seven Canadian winters and over 400K km, in for a tune-up and to inquire about a strange knocking sound/feel. The mechanic, who does not sell cars, advised me to not drive it any more because the frame had rusted through. He didn't even want us to drive it home. I had said I would drive it until the wheels fell off and they almost did... literally.

This is a month I have no shops scheduled. I do mostly gas shops these days, and there were no yellow sign monthlies in my area this month. No green sign shops are on the board in my area yet. No bonuses were offered for the red and whites, either. None. There won't likely be any reason to leave town for shopping for about a month.

We were a one-vehicle household for years, and can be one again. It will be goofy dragging the kid-hauling van on a shopping route, but I guess I wouldn't run out of room in the tank so quickly.

I empathise. My shopping vehicle had an engine fire 2 months ago after the power steering leaked all over the catalytic converter. We are now down to 2 vehicles for 5 adults, and I do routes. Ouch.

Two adults share one vehicle. This vehicle is older and costs less to own than a newer one. The morning job adds many miles per day to the odometer reading. We are biding our time until we absolutely must get another vehicle. Instead of owning two vehicles, we can rent a vehicle occasionally for a lower cost than owning one. I do not do long mystery shopping routes, but I like to go through and to the other side of the beloved wide open spaces for work and fun.

I am just now dealing with being a one car household. my wife has her car in the garage a sleek little sportscar that she bought when her mother died and she sold her mothers house. She considers it a gift from her mother and will never sell it. I drive a new 16 dodge van. It has less than 4000 miles on it and I've had it just over a year. A couple of weeks ago I went out to the garage and the garage doors wouldn't open. We have some kind of electrical short. Luckily my van was parked on the parking pad outside the garage but her car is stuck inside. This is not a good time for an extra bill in the sizes that electricians charge so we decided to put it off. She works from home and typically doesn't drive much anyway, but being a one car family is quite an adjustment anyway. Either I have to run her errands while I am out or she has to wait for me to get back. Luckily I don't do routes longer than a full day.

I suspect many of us could get by with one car per household (depending on the size) or at least less cars per household and we would be better off for it.

You are lucky that you are safe and nothing bad happened.

It was great when there was a place in town to rent a car! We were a one-car family, and would rent something bigger and newer for long trips. Even if it cost us $1000 or more to rent the car, it was cheaper than maintaining a separate vehicle. Now we have three kids and no car rental place in town. sad smiley

(When i lived in Ottawa, I did not own a car. My brother in Toronto has not had one in over a decade. Public transportation and a rental now and then do the trick.)
