That is great. A lot of little changes can add up to some big change. There has to be a better way to package those things if someone must have them. Companies like 7th generation make containers that break down eventually, instead of being in the landfill forever.
It’s literally the only thing that our crazy governor has done that I approve of.
Straws are also banned in many restaurants, you have to ask to get one. I feel CA is first in environment issues,
and our taxes prove it. Garbage in our complex has different places for paper, plastic and another for normal garbage. The hotel ban on shampoo bottles are another step in the right direction.

Drinking from straws give you those premature verticle liplines anyway.
But I think they might be instalilng more of those shampoo/conditioner dispensers that you see in Bed and Breakfast and AirBnBs. Which is a really great idea, as long as guests don't tamper with them. I guess they can figure it out as they go along.

I am not really up on what's going on out there, so without getting too political, what things has your crazy governor done that you don't approve of?

The major recycling center has closed up. Now it's really hard to find a place to take you bottles and cans. The state wasn't paying them enough. So now the state will keep the 5 cent recycle fees on cans and bottles and the streets will be littered with them again.

]What are you talking about, and do you live in CA? Recycling is still available outside our Ralphs, having folks waiting in line to recycle and have many other place's in my town, with recycling in my development. Perhaps they closed a few, but let's not be dramatic, and please do your research and see if the main recycling opened somewhere else. Gas is 4.19 here and due to a shortage did go up, but has fallen in recent weeks....although over 4.00 is high, I lived to see a major gas shortage and unable to get gas at all years ago, what else is new? We do however get taxed more than anywhere and yes, working folks shouldn't have to carry the burden and free health care is another tax the working pay for. Many are leaving CA (Los Angeles) due to the high cost of living,

A lot of areas in the country are quitting recycling because China doesn't want our garbage anymore (look it up). I learned this when the recycle bins in my area suddenly disappeared one day, a couple of months ago. Life just got more expensive. There was some good stuff in those bins sometimes! Especially Sunday coupons!

Re-Planet closed up about 2 or 3 months ago. They took more than 90% of the recycling in CA. So, instead of 30+ places to recycle in my area, there are 5. All Targets quit taking recycling because of this.
I am 100% sure that no Ralph's in my area have recycling centers now. Two or three months ago, they did. You might want to check.

The only time that I use bottled water and soda is at a hotel. I use filtered water and a reusable bottle or a glass. So for me, I am content to throw them in my weekly recycling bins or give them to my housekeeper. She lives in an area where they still have big recycling centers.
Texas was/is way behind the curve, at least in some cities. In the Port Arthur area they didn' and don't recycle anything. They do recycle in Austin, though. In Houston they won't recycle glass but will take plastic and cans. In Phoenix at my cousins' house, if the recycled item has even a hint of food residue in it, they won't take it.
Ralph's near me where I go, I pass the recycling area almost daily, so know first hand, but I understand many have closed...maybe in area's people just don't use them, not everyone is into it.

We could make our own cosmetics, using washable, reusable glass, enamel, and wood during preparation. Then, we could store our homemade, personalized goodies in washable, reusable glass containers.

The mamas in my area absolutely flipped their lids. Re-Planet closed and they all of a sudden had to recycle THAT VERY DAY! I think that they use the cash for boxed wine. LOL
I have about 300 bottles, due to my husband drinking diet soda all day long. I told him not to buy anymore unless he plans on taking them in. (I am giving them to the housekeeper though. So much easier. It's less than $20 anyway.)

6 pack of Coke has a 30 cent tax/deposit. If you want the 30 cents back, you have to take your bottles back to the recycling center. It adds up.
Oh yeah! I would save my wine bottles and take them to Ralph's at the end of the month. I would get some pocket change in return.

The deposit fee is a good idea, because the bottles are washed and reused. Funny story here, when my mother was a child of about 12 she would go to the neighborhood store and go behind it and pick up some of the reusable bottles that had been returned. Then she would take them around front, get the deposit and buy candy.
Our county discontinued recycling but we still save soda cans and take them to the recycling center ourselves. We try not to use bottles and like SoCalMama we use our own water bottles with our own filtered water. Buying those plastic bottles is death to the planet. I tend not to use a lot of canned goods. I will buy the fresh veggies and cook them myself.

They just banned plastic bags where we are. You now need to bring your own bags to the store.

In our area, curbside recycling was introduced as a voluntary service for $x mo. Couldn't get enough volunteers, so it became $2x per month. Then it became mandatory with a small credit on the bill for the value of recyclables. Now it's just a charge, and the only way to opt-out of it is to cancel garbage pickup. If the plastic is recyclable, I don't see why areas don't simply build their own plants instead of shipping to China.@sestrahelena wrote:

Just saw our Starbucks now have two trash options, one regular and one for recycling...everything helps and all my neighbors are conscious of saving the earth (if you will), and our complex has a bin for recycling, so we are doing our share...I am now being diligent about plastic water bottles after reading this thread.

I saw these cool reusable food covers made out of sillcone on Amazon in neat patterns. They can replace plastic wrap. You form them over your bowl/plate or whatever with the warmth of your hands and they seal over the container. Then you can rewash them. How great is that!
Other than Aldi, I only support stores that offer free plastic bags. I reuse them for small can liners, kitchen waste and garden waste.
