Sending a heavy package

I need to mail some heavy boxes (35-50 pounds) to my out-of-state children. What is the cheapest way to do it?

USPS CPU shops.. as long as the boxes meet the size requirements, you'll pay for the extra weight, but you'll get your items shipped and get some money back.
Thanks for the information, but I haven't seen any CPU shops in my area in MONTHS! And with the holidays coming up I know USPS shops will go on hiatus. I'm thinking I'll have to buck up to get the stuff sent...and I'd like to spend as little money as possible.

USPS shops came out today in my area for this month, but December pretty sure you will be out of luck. Still not going to help you that much with postage.

Do they not have shops in December, or is it just that the competition is fierce? (I just started shopping with this company earlier this summer)

They don't like shops that close to Christmas. The wait times are longer than normal so the report would likely be unfavorable to the post office. There might be some harder to fill remote shops still left on the board. It's the end of the quarter anyway. Even during the first 3 quarters shops are released the first 2 months and not the 3rd.
Have you checked out shipping on Greyhound bus? When my friend moved half way across the country, she had to ship some big ones, and the Grey dog was the cheapest.
Thank you. I will look into that option.
