Panhandling...

Now I want some rice and beans. I'm going to make that tomorrow.

Sounds good, but I want red beans and rice...I do have some andouille sausage in my freezer.
I can't find the DISLIKE button for Jas's post! Ewww! I hate RB&R! And people rave about it like it's a five star meal. Yuk. ( Hah! I'm getting even with the okra-hater!)
Blahahahahahaha! You're allowed to hate red beans and rice if you want, IDC. But, you've never tasted mine! Do you not like beans or rice? It's fine if so. Oh, I hate coleslaw, too.
Beans - pasty and tasteless. Rice - pellet like and tasteless. Both - carbs on carbs for survival, not nutrition. I prefer my double empty carbs to be cake and icing, or a spaghetti wedge. But you go ahead and enjoy your beans!
The food bank always has recipes using items in the produce bank. Today's recipe was West African Sweet Potato Stew. That's what I am making tomorrow. It includes beans and rice. No okra.

You don't like sushi? Love it!

As far as beans and rice go, it's a staple in Louisiana and Mexico, both places I love to visit. Yummy. Not a big fan of cake, really, unless it's cheesecake. But I do love pasta!
If that is the texture and taste, they aren't cooked correctly.

I literally could live on black beans, and have a dozen ways to have them, salad, taco, burrito's, soup,,,,o.k. I'll stop now, plus the fiber, oh everyone needs the fiber.....takes a lot of moxie to ask for more when what your getting is keeping you alive.

I love red beans and rice. I never learned to cook them so I get them at Popeye's. Maybe I should stop there today.
Zatarain's has a box version that's simple and cheap (I think $1.50). Aldi has a knockoff on it that's pretty good and less expensive (.99 cents). You just add your favorite cured meat...you can use sausage, ham, whatever you like pretty much. I like the andouille best but I have used Polish Kielbasa before because that's what I had around. Making from scratch is best, though.
First, beans are great meatless protein alternatives and they have tons of nutrients. Second, I feel like you haven't R & B prepared properly if you think either is tasteless (but of course, everyone has different tastes).

I will take rice and beans any day and there's times where I am super low on funds that I'll eat beans every day.

With some great Cajun spices, RB&R can't be bland or tasteless. I could eat rice alone, too. I like it with a little butter and salt for a snack. I make a kickass fried rice recipe using filet mignon chunks leftover from when I trim a tenderloin into steaks, and I use mung bean sprouts, snow peas, asparagus, and other great veggies. I like wild rice, too. Seasoning is the key to every great meal, no matter what it is. Even steak is bland if it's not seasoned properly.
Black beans, kidney beans and the rest have protein, fiber and are a healthy alternative...if you think they are bland/tasteless, your not making them right. Chicken or shredded beef, black beans (or your favorite) olives, red onion, hard boiled egg over mixed greens, a full meal and don't forget the ranch dressing and avocado.

OMG avocados!!!! Love them. Irene, you are so lucky to be in CA where they are cheap. I feel lucky when I find one for $1 or a little less. My friend who lives in San Diego can get them for .25 cents at Sprouts sometimes.
I love avocados also. I like the mini ones because you can eat a whole one as opposed to half of one of the bigger ones and then you try to save the other half....

Anyway, I like canned chicken mixed with a little mayo and hot sauce and then put over avocado.

I make a smoked salmon dip with cream cheese and lemon pepper. A good bite is a dollop of the dip on a Ritz or some other tasty cracker, then a slice of lightly salted avocado on top. It looks very fancy on a silver appetizer tray. For those who are watching carbs, a slice of seedless cucumber works well as a base for the dip.
You know, a ball of pressed white rice would make a good base as well, though not for those watching carbs smiling smiley

I could never go on a low-carb diet, I love my breads, pasta, and rice too much.

You only eat half of the big ones? Avocados are the best food God made. Especially on white bread with mayo and tomatoes.

My gramma and grampa lived in Davis, CA. They both passed a long time ago, but I remember sitting in the back yard as a tot and gramma literally picking a half dozen avocados and making a giant shrimp (those things were seriously huge) salad and she would put it in the half avocado. It's been almost 40 years and I'm still trying to get something as good as that on my plate. Luckily, I get my avocados at the Dollar Produce and sometimes towards the squishy stage, you can get 2/$1.

That sounds wonderful! I use a lot of sweet potatoes. Two weeks I threw together a curry with sweet potatoes, cauliflower, and chick peas. Last week was roasted sweet potatoes, red cabbage, and ham (Honeybaked, from a shop).

I wish I could learn to like sweet potatoes. I have tried, just can't develop a palate for them.
I get the small avocados from Aldi, and I eat those whole. For the big ones, I cut them in half and eat them a few days apart.

Weight Watchers has a new pan for people who love bread. I am not doing this one, but some people might be relieved to know that they can have bread and lose weight.

Don't eat pasta more than once a week, rice, just o.k., but bread, could live on LaBrea French bread or San Francisco sourdough, bagels, sandwich's, a good tuna melt with avocado, could never give those up.

Jas -I love the Zatarain's red beans and rice. I usually put a little sausage in it at the end. Sestra - If the dish is cooked well, it should never be bland or mushy. There are so many herbs and spices to try, but always sparingly.
I usually "doctor" it up a little to suit my tastes. I don't venture into the neighborhoods here where Popeye's locations are, not exactly safe areas. In the South it was different, Popeye's was in good areas and bad. Not in my part of the Midwest.
