Panhandling...

Sorry about your luck. I was out of luck for the longest time but they just built one in my little suburb so I'm tickled silly. The chicken is okay but I don't really eat fried food so I just get the beans and rice and go home and eat it. I get the wife some weird pie they sell there, she likes it.

They've been promising us a Popeye's in my area forever with rumors about where it will. They announced that Trump was coming to town this month and all of a sudden there's a Popeye's being built. LOL It's one of the biggest things being talked about, besides the actual visit.

I want to hear more about the weird pie. The only pie I ever thought was truly weird was mincemeat pie.

It was fudge pie. To me that sounds weird.

Okay. I guess they could have called it something else that would sound more appealing. Still better than mincemeat pie!

My mom used to make mincemeat pie. I have no idea what the hell that stuff actually is but nobody wanted to eat it. The only pie that was ever ignored in our house.

It goes well with fruitcake, LOL!!!!! Those are two things no one wants to eat. My mom made both. I never understood it. I remember her spending good money on those horrible little candied fruits and then baking that godawful dense lump of bread-like cake...ugh. And the mincemeat pie? Double ugh.

*Edited to add that I just read what "suet" is (that goes in the "mince" they use in those pies):

Suet is made from the fat that surrounds the kidneys of animals (mostly cows and mutton).

And actually, back in the 16th century, it really had meat in it too. Along with the raisins and all that other crap. But the English are well-known for some strange foods, like kidney pie, blood pudding, etc. UGH.

I guess fudge pie might remind someone of that chocolate pie in the movie "The Help"....

Years and years ago, mincemeat pie actually had some ground meat in it (pork or beef or venison). Now-a-days it's just a filling of raisins, dates, and apples in a sweet thickened syrup. It comes in two forms, by a company called Nonesuch...either in a jar that you just pour into a pie shell and cover with another pie shell and bake. Or, you can get it as dried fruit that you reconstitute in water on the stove. It thickens and then you pour that into the pie shell, add another pie crust for the top, and bake. My hubby loves it, but it's harder and harder to find the dry boxed version that you reconstitute. That's the kind we like best. The one in the jar just doesn't seem to taste the same as the reconstituted one.
