Weird pandemic shortages

People still eat white rice? I also eat brown or wild rice. I am especially partial to brown basmati rice.

I saw small bags (enough for one or two small side dishes, I suppose) of wild and other rice. The little bags were orange or red.

Why are there no small bags of rice? I do not want a 10lb bag. I went to 3 different stores yesterday and only the gigantic bags available. I ended up getting some Jasmine Rice - which was delicious and also about 3X the price of the normal white.

White rice is less than 50 cents a pound.
Jasmine and Basmati rice is over $1 a pound.
So if people are used to getting a 20 pound bag of white rice for $9.99, then they are the crowd who is paying $1-$2 a pound for fancy rice.

I can find Blinze's anywhere...used to get them at Trader Joe's, but every place is sold out.

Live consciously....
I get my (brown) rice at an Asian grocery store, choosing whatever size bag gives me the best deal-usually 15 pr 20 pounds. Still more expensive than white, but much cheaper than at a traditional grocery store.

My DD went to Winco yesterday and her $5 bag of white rice is now $7.13. A 45% increase. I softy suggested she buy two bags.
King Arthur Bread Flour, Pickle Relish, still no Lysol Spray (since the beginning of March).
There is a shortage of yeast here.

Pickle relish is quite random. I saw Lysol spray in Walgreen's the other day. Walmart had their own brand of disinfectant spray. The big grocery stores, which would be the logical place to look/find it, have been out for a while.

My boyfriend saw a whole shelf of lysol spray, wipes, etc at Home Depot today. He said they also had plenty of paper towels and other cleaners. I always forget about that section at home improvement stores. I bet a lot of other people do, too.

Not in So Cal. People have cleared it out everywhere, including the Persian markets. Home Improvement stores, hardware stores, liquor stores, etc. - all gone. The only time that I have seen it was on Friday at CVS. Lysol To Go, travel size, $4.99.
Dont forget to try office/business supply stores and restaurant/farm supply stores. They carry all kinds of paper products and many (most?) of them, like Quill, Office Depot, and Staples, ship or deliver.

No exactly the same as shortages, But...I take Hydroxychloroquine and normally pay $90.00 for a 3 month supply. Today the price was $151.00 for the same amount.

Did you try GoodRx? I put in 90 quantity 200mg and these are the prices:
Walmart $39.64
CVS $82.92
Walgreens $112.27

You can make them, they are really easy. You can add a lot more flavor with extra lemon zest, vanilla or add almond flavor.
We have no yeast or good soup. I like Progresso and sometimes the only kind left are the light soup. I have been finding TP and small bottles of hand sanitizer.
MIA... Philadelphia Cream Cheese with Smoke Salmon.

No bagels with lox & cream cheese. Apparently, the lox and/or the cream cheese are too expensive now and the bagel pros have put that recipe on hold for awhile. Fortunately, other faves are still available.

I had to buy the little tub of cream cheese. They had Great Value but I like the name brand.
Liquor stores carry hand sanitizers made by the breweries. Who can better make an alcohol based cleaner?

I'm missing edamame. However, I think listeria is the reason for its absence rather than the pandemic.
It isn't a shortage but it was ridiculous. I bought almost 2L (I think it was 1.96L) of hand sanitizer at Costco for $10. Then I went to another national chain store and saw 273ml of hand sanitizer for the same $10. The manager had several lame excuses but to me it looks a lot like price gouging.
Bleach prices also are all over the place. I've seen a gallon/ $1.99 but the price rises from there.
This isn't weird per se, but they are often out of the Tropicana OJ (with calcium and Vitamin D) that I like. People seem to like that brand a lot too I guess. Or, maybe they want it for the Vitamin D and Vitamin C.

Anyhow, I've been having to buy non-ideal brands of OJ.

Aldi's sells their own brand of this for $1.99 for the non-concentrate (with calcium and Vit D, as well as all the other regular variations) for their now-52 oz bottles, which is what ALL the brands are now (they keep shrinking!!). Hubby & I used to drink Trop 50 (diluted 50%), so now I buy the Aldi non-concentrate (with cal & vit D) and use bottled water to rinse out an empty container, then divide the contents of the bottle between the 2 bottles, and fill the rest with bottled water. Voila! Trop 50 at less than half the price!
I stopped in Gordon Food Services (GFS) the other day. They had both 1# 'bricks' of activated dry yeast for under $4 and 2 1# bricks packed together for less than 2X that. I got the 2 pack and mailed one to my sister, who has been having trouble finding yeast. They had beautiful, fresh, firm heads of garlic from California by the pound. They had hand sanitizer but at about $10 for about 32 oz I kept going. They did have boxes of disposable latex gloves at a pretty normal price, so I got a fresh box.
White rice has all of the nutrients stripped out. Loosely speaking, it was created to fatten malnourished men entering the military during the Depression.

Brown rice is nutrient dense. Black rice looks pretty under colorful vegetables.

Mom and I love basmati and Jasmine rice. The others prefer brown rice. I find brown to be hard. Not the kind of texture Mom and I are looking for.
I heard on the business news a few days ago that sales of appliances and all home remodeling materials have sky-rocketed during the shut downs. Now that I am in the market for a new clothes dryer, I find that the top rated Samsung, that is on a nice 4th of July sale price, can be ordered, but is not actually in stock within 250 miles. I can still get the sale price, but delivery and installation are "estimated" for Aug 1, at the earliest.

My Kenmore was new in 1983, when I bought this house. It dries clothes, but the door no longer latches and must be propped closed with a heavy chair. I decided that it is worth while to pay twice as much for a new, larger, much more energy energy efficient one, as for a repair to the old one.

Also, the jalapeno peppers that I can find, for several weeks now, are only available in a size that would dwarf a pickling-sized cucumber, I am NOT paying $1.99 so that I can use 1/2 tsp of one!

Sorry. I have your jalapenos. I paid $0.59 for 2 of them in my imperfectfoods box. They sent me 20. I got 20 for $0.59. LOL We are making salsa I guess? Roma tomatoes are in a glut here too. They're $0.39/pound.

High demand here:
at home fitness equipment, bikes, good bread flour (King Arthur in the blue bag), 91% isopropyl alcohol.

Costco has wipes almost every day, for about an hour. My BFF got me a case and a half of Lysol spray last week.
