I can just see teachers from long ago staring me down and hear them commanding, "Now, use 'gaslighting' in a sentence."
I am beyond that old, immediate sort of compliance and invite anyone here who is brave enough to use 'gaslighting' in a sentence to post their work here. What. We do not have a classroom, chalkboards, whiteboards, connected interactive devices to commune with teachers, etc.

Climate change activists are gaslighting to gain even more control and to destroy the USA.
If you want to have a good understanding of how the word "gaslighting" came to be, just watch the 1940s B&W version of the movie "Gaslight" with Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. Boyer used the term to the nth degree!! Quite a good psychological thriller!!

AND, it introduced a very young actress by the name of Angela Landsbury.

I live with a crude gaslighter. Yikes! It will be a pleasure to see Angela Lansbury in the movie 'Gaslight' and also see the gaslighting techniques therein. Now, all I have to do is find the movie on a free online service or via a library.

If my library does not have 'Gaslight', the university library will undoubtedly have it. Its collection of classic movies is extensive.

I think so many people googled it because they can't figure out what it means.. From what I can tell, it is just used to cast aspersions on someone with whom you disagree.

I would add that it involves an element of premeditation. Gaslighting is a deliberate act or cluster of actions. How far will someone go, with or without ability to acknowledge awareness of their efforts, to gaslight another? With my hubby, the apple did not fall far from the tree. I believe that he will never question the appropriateness of the family's use of gaslighting and other methods of destruction. Mind you, I love his family. I strongly disapprove of their determination to harm and destroy. I like nurturing and get that from other people.

In the movie "Gaslight" it meant using psychological manipulation to make someone think things that weren't true, and even to get them to question their own sanity and reason.@mystery2me wrote:

Thanks, everyone. I found and watched the movie. It was good to include the heroine's bravery. Talking-- talking back, talking to someone, or even shouting it down are better than silence and not correcting lies.
