I submitted a writing sample that was not long enough for them. They seem to be constantly looking for shoppers and it makes me wonder why. I have done several hotel shops with narratives but nothing that requires 17-20 pages of writing. So, I am wondering what their reports consist of that requires so much writing? I can't imagine that one meal would take two pages of single spaced writing to describe.

I average 2-3 pages of narrative for each fine dining meal. GC requires what I consider to be standard for narrative driven evaluations.
I looked at their sample and I covered pretty much what their sample covered. However, since I did not encounter many of the people included in the report (it was not a fine dining situation and I don't do those shops I was interested in the hotel and spa shops), they were not included in the report. I think I'll stick with the companies I'm already shopping for.
Know that just about every hotel I have evaluated for GC includes a TON of fine dining in addition to the hotel and spa, and just about any hotel with a spa evaluation will include at least one fine dining outlet.

It goes with the territory and you have to be comfortable with eating and reporting fine dining if you work for them. I just got back from one of their hotels and I think I need to fast for a week now....way too much eating!
My hotel shops for them are usually 35 to 45 pages of narrative. I had one that was over a 100 (5 night stay). They definetly are not a good choice if you dont like narrative heavy reports.
How can I get signed up for Guest Check? I've went to their site but there's not an "application" link. Any help would be awesome!

Does this MSC have just fine dining shops without the hotel and spa stay? I will be traveling throughout parts of New England in October but I won't have time to write 35-40 page reports. I will be shooting freelance photography projects during daylight hours, weather permitting.

They have bars without the hotel. I agree with steve and Mickey. I did several hotels with them. It's not just the narratives, which I am used to writing a boook, but there's also pictures, and spreadsheets. They have a most "interesting" reporting format. You have to be VERY detail oriented. They cover every facet of the hotel stay, much more than all the other msc. For the two night hotel stay, I spend 10-12 hours writing and I am a fast typist and experienced hotel evaulator. The scheduler and editors are wonderful and responsive.

I have an upcoming shop scheduled with them; apparently I signed up a while back and they've not had anything in my area until now. However, I can't find the area to log in! Can anyone direct me to the right place? (I really hate to have their first impression of me be a dumb one!!)
There is no log in and no job board for their website. All scheduling is handled through email as far as I know.

For some shops, they will send a link to an online reporting platform. Check with your scheduler if it's not in the assignment email.....

The hotels I have done for them are by phone calls and emails. They will send you instructions, spreadsheet, word docu, plus there is a phone training. They are not the fastest, but will get to you a few days before the shop date. It is quite a system to upload the shop reports and pictures, which are not done by email, due to the sizes of the pictures. They are a great company and responsive, once you're on property and have questions.

I think my problem was that I couldn't download the file in the initial email, but got it now (thanks to some direction from SteveSoCal) and did the shop last night! That was quite a learning curve on that one, because I got the email just a couple hours before I was going to do the shop. It was fun and the report not bad at all! Thank you both for your feedback!
I have not worked for this MSC. But I have done a resort stay. How can they wait to send you the guidelines on such short notice? Hotels and resorts are so detailed with lots to cover. Most MSCs want to to read all the guidelines days on advance, contact your scheduler with any questions, and read the guidelines again jut before performing the shop. I just don't get it.

I've not done work for them either, but cannot imagine the last minute instructions were for an overnight/resort stay. I am curious, but almost aurantee its not an overnight assignment in question here...The website states they do simple bar, and stand alone restaurants too. Sure, it would be nice to have more notice for Q&A before taking the assignment, but sometimes it doesn't work out that way. Last minute assignments happen all the time, and are not always the MSC's fault.

I might be misunderstanding, but to me it sounds like Josey had technical issues but that the guidelines were sent earlier, in an initial email.
I believe it was a simple bar/food audit and the the instructions in the initial email could not be accessed.

Hope the shop was enjoyable, josey.

Everything that happens. One meal - if you dialouge everything that happens - is 2 to 3 pages. In a say three night stay you have 6-8 meals, so the meals alone are 20-25 pages. You also have check-in and check-out (to include door, bell and possibly valet) - which is easily another 6 pages. Then you have concierge visits and phone calls, PDX calls, requests (maintenance, housekeeping, etc.), possibly spa or other activities, public area inspections and detailed lists of any deficiencies, etc. etc. 50 pages is easy...

Narrative intense (or narrative driven) reports are detailed accounts of everything that happens. There is no summarization of the experience, everything is accounted for and detailed out.
This was a simple bar/restaurant shop with no narrative at all, and I had spoken to them earlier in the week and told them it sounded exactly like others I had done at a different hotel. And I did have an issue with being unable to download the file that had the instructions, and therefore didn't have the site address to go in directly and look them up. They asked if I had availability in the next three weeks or so, and I told them earlier in the week I would do it Friday. She gave me a deadline of Monday to complete it, but I wanted to stick with what I had said since it was my first time working with them (and had other things going on the rest of the weekend) Also, I didn't want to be remembered for being the one that sent out 20 emails before I even opened up the shop instructions LOL.

Yes, the shop was fun! It was a place I would not have gone to otherwise, and we spent way too much money that fortunately I'll get back - can't beat that!
