SQM Step 9

Has anyone made is to the Step 9 test yet? It is unbelievably difficult.

I was able to pass Steps 1 through 8 fairly quickly and always scored between 23 and 25 out of 25 each time.

So Step 9 is entirely different - I took it yesterday and scored 16/25. Today, I changed one answer twice and am now at 15/25.

These questions are all judgement calls as opposed to strictly knowledge like the other steps. For example:

Your room has no maintenance issues, what should you do:
a) Turn the batteries around in the remote
b) Clog the toilet with toilet paper
c) Unscrew a lightbulb
d) Call downstairs, report a problem and when they arrive, say you figured it out
e) A and D
f) Any of the above
g) None of the above

The worst part is, you have only 2 changes per day to take the test and you are not told which answers are incorrect. This will take me a month to get through, UGH.

I haven't taken the test, but if one of the goals of the shop is to challenge them to see how they handle a problem, my first guess would be 'f'.

If you feel stuck, you might want to contact the company. In situations like this, many are willing to help out.

Yes, I also answered any of the above, however when you get your score you are unable to see which questions you answered correctly. So, I will change one answer per day (twice, as you can take the test twice in 24 hours) until I get them correct.

Most are scenario questions and "what would you do if this happened" type thing - like if your plane had to make an emergency landing, etc., and many of the options listed as possibilities seem correct. It is when they say "all of the above", "some of the above" or just "a" or just "b" where it gets tricky.

But I will carry on! It's a challenge so I will keep at it until I get everything right.

Just for fun, here is another question. :-) You can see how 25 questions like this could become tricky, especially when you receive your score and don't know which ones are wrong!

9. You’re on a resort evaluation. You’re supposed to evaluate one of the bars at the resort in twenty minutes, but suddenly you start to feel really nauseous. You think it’s probably from something you ate at lunch, but you can’t be sure. The time to do the evaluation keeps getting closer, and you’re not feeling better. What should you do?

(a) You must complete this part of the evaluation. There are no exceptions.
(b) You will look suspicious if you go to the bar looking ill and having to rush to the bathroom every few minutes. Stay in and rest, but call SQM as soon as possible.
(c) Stay in and rest. You can do the evaluation at the same time the next day.
(d) Don’t do the evaluation and explain what happened in the report.
(e) Any of the above. It’s impossible to plan for these circumstances, so any of the above choices would be acceptable.

Just my two cents, but I'd go with 'b'.

My guess is that the likely outcome would be 'c', but it's up to them to make that decision and provide for the exeption, not you.
I have not taken any of the sqm steps yet but my first reaction would be to choose the one most likely to get the job done and cause little to no harm. For that reason in the list provided by the Dhunt1 I would not choose clogging the toilet with toilet paper. This might lead to a serious plumbing problem down the line if mishandled. My choice, assuming they do want you to call for help and see what happens, reporting reaction times, friendliness, helpfulness etc, would be unscrewing the lightbulb. IF you never see me on an SQM shop it will be because I am completely off on my reasoning...
I have finished step 9, but it was 2 years ago. If they have not changed the test, I should know the answer. You can PM me.

This thread piqued my curiosity so I registered with SQM yesterday and started taking the STEPS about 10 hours ago.

"I was able to pass Steps 1 through 8 fairly quickly and always scored between 23 and 25 out of 25 each time."

Same here. Pretty easy so far.

Took one test. Did a shop. Had dinner. Drove my sister home from work. Visited my dad at the skilled nursing care facility. Came home. Took some more tests.

Except for getting 24/25 on the STEP 1 test and passing it on my second attempt, I passed each test on the first try. Just passed Level 4. =D

I'm tired and my eyes are dry. Will continue tomorrow. =)

"So Step 9 is entirely different - I took it yesterday and scored 16/25. Today, I changed one answer twice and am now at 15/25."

Looking forward to it. I'll probably either have a lot of fun or be incredibly frustrated. =D
Wow BusyBee Step 4 in one night! Good for you! Can't wait until you get to Step 9.

I have another two hours until I can try it again, lol. Since I am only at 16/25, I will change several answers to my second choice, leave the ones I am pretty sure of, and see how I score. I'll use that as a base to then start changing one at a time.

Cubbiecat thanks for the offer! :-)

I've passed Step 9 but it was also a few years ago. From trying to help previous shoppers, it appears that the tests have changed.

From what I remember, changing the light bulb was the correct answer for your first question.

For the second, I think (cool smiley - rest and call SQM to explain - is the answer to the other one.

BTW, are you taking these tests for a specific reason/specific shop opportunities?

Good luck!
No, no specific reason or specific shop opportunities. I just had flown through the first 8 steps, and figured I would finish just in case a different opportunity was ever posted.

Once I hit Step 7 I believe, I was accepted for everything. Step 8 took one try to pass, and I figured Step 9 would be similar.

Thanks for the luck!

Thanks, Dhunt1.

At first, I created a spreadsheet to keep track of my answers but soon discovered that was not necessary. The system that works for me is:

1. Log in to SQM and keep that window/tab open.
2. Open the STEP page in another window/tab.
3. Go to the next test.
4. Find out which SQM document(s) I need to read by looking at the test. Go to the window/tab in Item 1, access the document(s), and save it/them as a PDF(s). Open the PDF(s).
5. Go through the test questions one by one. Sometimes, there is no need to look up anything because the answer is obvious. If I am unsure, I search the PDF using key words/concepts from the question. If I can't find the answer in the PDF, I search for it in likely areas on the SQM site. If I still can't find the answer (which has not happened yet), I take an educated guess.
6. After I have anwered all the questions in the test, I save it as a PDF. That way, I have a copy of the test with my my answers.
7. Submit the test.
8. Most of the time, I pass on the first try. If I fail, I review my copy and figure out which one(s) I missed. Reload the test, changing only one answer. Save a copy as a PDF. Submit the answers and cross my fingers.
9. Either move on to the next level or wait 24 hours to retake the failed test.

You have my good wishes. This is a test not to be consumed by man. I stopped after level 5, never to return. Making it to level 9, you must continue, I hope they have jobs you want. just too many trick questions for me. I wouldn't even begin to "guess", but emailing or calling the scheduler , I remember her being very nice, she might help....let us know when you pass.

Live consciously....
Now I am taking it as a challenge to finish. I got to 8 years ago, but never did 9. I think maybe I took one quiz, but got distracted and never finished.
THANK YOU for the suggestion to email the scheduler!! Here is the reply that I just received:

Hi Dawn,

We had our edit team review the quiz and you are completely correct - it is a complete mess! We are working on correcting it and when it is ready to try again I will let you know.

Thank you and sorry for this mishap.

Glad you let me know!!!! I was planning to spend my evening working on levels 7-9. (not much to do after DGS goes to bed)
I made it through step 8 but never did step 9... I have never been turned down for an assignment that I wanted - but there is always a first time.

Regarding your example (the one in the OP) - I would have gone with A or C - they both seem like they are correct (but obviously there is no A and C option, so one is not correct. So I would guess between A and C until I got it right... however, as you say - it can take a long time if you have 10-15 of these where it could go either way.

Clogging the toilet is wrong because it is too destructive. That makes B and F out. D is wrong because you would want to see how the engineer actually handles the issue (making E and F also wrong, as they involve D)...

Yea, this is making my head hurt and I am not even taking the test! There is a reason I am only Step 8...
I am so frustrated with this level 9 test. I have tried to reason it all out, to change a couple of answers only per time, but it is so tiresome! I am stuck on a few- and have flipped from a few answers back and forth and still no higher than 19/25! often only 15/25! I would appreciate help form others- this is what I have come up with after many, many ties now-
Level 9:
1-e
2-d
3-d
4-b
5-a
6-d
7-b
8-a
9-b
10-d
11-e
12-d
13-a
14-c
15-e
16-c
17-a
18-d
19-c
20-d
21-b
22-a
23-d
24-c
25-e
Sabrinaroo2 - please see my post above, August 29 @ 12:55 pm. They see that level is a mess and they are re-doing the quiz.

Wow! I must say I am impressed. I am by no means a dumb person, but I cannot get past level one. All of the answers are correct according to the reference material but it keeps telling me I have 1 wrong and will not let me proceed. I have tried going in a changing answers but nothing works. I gave up on it for now and may go back later, but I'm not sure it's worth it.
I have not registered with this MSC yet. Does anyone know if the testing problems have been corrected yet? I don't have time to waste taking incorrect tests. Thanks.

I work for this MSC. They have some jobs I like. Pay is average overall. I don't think I got any more jobs after taking the tests. So you can sign up and see who their clients are, select jobs and try working for them before worrying about the tests. And maybe you never have to worry about the tests. I did up to level 6 and didn't see any more jobs.

The only way I got through the levels was list my answers the first time through. Sometimes I had 4 wrong. Then I tried changing one answer only, and seeing if my score went up or down. That makes two tries and then I couldn't try again for 24 hours. Then 2 more tries changing one answer each time. Sometimes I understood why the correct answer was correct after finding my mistakes and other times it still didn't make sense to me. Anyway, it's over a year since I got my level 6 and several months since I tried level 7. One day when I'm not busy I'll try it again, but I get work from them anyway, so not too worried about it.

I passed all 9 levels in 2008 and the answer to the above question was A-turn the batteries around.
I don't agree with that answer in 2012.
However, I have done many, many 3 and 4 star hotel shops and if you turn the batteries around, you are practically screaming you are a mystery shopper.
There are many less obvious things to complain about in a hotel room.

You must be joking! Level 9? unheard of! Most people (me included) can't get past level 2 or 3.
I had my fill of SQM last year, when their supposed answers to Level One did not agree with the questions. I figured, if they wanna fool around and waste my time, screw them. I've better things to do.

In this case I would guess D, you call downstairs, when they show up say you figured it out yourself.

BUT, since SQM likes to give people the WRONG answer and then make them feel like idiots for getting it right, the correct answer is probably:

H ) We are hiding this correct answer from you, so you will not be able to pass the test.

I have passed step 9 and you are correct - it's B.

For the other question, the answer is to flip the batteries around.

It took me months, but I was determined to pass all 9 steps, even though they have very few shops in the US, especially in my state. I took it as a challenge and it was gratifying as I passed each step.
