I have seen them done, even fairly recently. The 'pay' now is a gift card to use on your next visit and I read on one forum where even the gift cards have to be chased.
don't know about your area I live in AZ. They also have for Disney store.

Skeptical, while it was helpful of you to provide the name of the MSP, we are not allowed to do so, if it's mentioned in the same thread as the client's name. The independent contractor agreement we sign for each MSP prohibits this. You should go back to your post, click on edit, and remove their name.

Sorry I've sign up for different ones I work for and some tell you to refer and to tell others so it gets confusing to tell or not to tell.
It usually is the emails that ask you to tell your friends. Your ICA in all instances I have seen requires you to protect any 'confidential information'. While a number of these are vague, I saw one the other day that specified not mentioning the client, not mentioning the fees, not mentioning any descriptions of the job etc. It is best for you as a shopper as well as for the health of the board just not to give away too much information while trying to be helpful. I don't know of anyone who has been "busted", but it is possible to find you are not receiving any jobs you request and used to do with no understanding of why.
The Cheesecake Factory visits are a racket! You're expected to spend around $50-$60 but your "reimbursment" is only a $30 gift card! That would never fly in the business world. CF is getting away with murder by not paying for their OWN evaluations. I think that's such a sham. Thoughts?

I think it's fortunate that they tell you up front what you will receive - a gift card - and shoppers can decide whether to work for that or not. I have chosen not to. That wouldn't be worth it to me. Apparently, there are shoppers who are willing to accept those shops and work for gift cards, otherwise this MSC would not be able to provide shoppers to the client to do the shops.
AustinMom, anyone who feels they are not entitled to full reimbursment for the work provided, is either not submitting quality work, or is doing mystery shopping as a hobby. In either case, that individual likely doesn't understand the value of the work the IC does for the companies involved. Honestly, I think it's disrespectful to "hire" someone as an IC but not fairly compensate them for their efforts. But, you're right, the information is disclosed up front. I think of two apprpriate phrases: Caveat Emptor; and, P.T. Barnum's famous phrase about who's born every minute!

FlyAndShop
That's my point. This is not something new: the MSC has been doing the gift card thing for some time. Obviously, they are able to fill these shops. There are shoppers accepting the jobs, and it doesn't really concern me. People work for a lot of different reasons, and they make choices about what jobs they will accept based on their own motives and circumstances. Individuals accepting these jobs may be hobby shoppers or may not, but I don't think accepting jobs with compensation you and I will not accept means that they don't understand the value of the work or that they are not submitting quality work. There are a lot of reasons a shopper, including serious shoppers who submit quality work, might accept a low-paying job.
I do not do jobs for gift cards for partial reimbursement for future visits, as I do not choose to. For *my* own reasons, which might or might not be the same as one else's.

If some people want to, for whatever their reasons, let them. I don't have a problem with them doing so.

There are many reasons to mystery shop, and not all shoppers value the same things or have the same personal or family needs. This is true in all facets of employment, and not just shopping. I see no reason to effectively call a shopper with different values than yours a sucker, dktomb.

I suppose if you like to eat there and are aware of the costs of the products, you could view it as a discount on a dinner that you would have willing paid full price for. Plus, you don't have to count it on your taxes.

It is possible that a lot of those jobs are being filled by people who don't understand what their bill is going to be.
I think these shops are awesome - you DO NOT have to spend $50 or $60. They have very realistic minimal ordering requirements and you can indeed spend less than your payment of either $30 or $40. I could care less that they pay in the form of a gift card. It's still a free meal or you can use the gift card as a gift for someone else. I have worked for probably 30+ companies (have signed up with at least 75+) and how many pay you $8 or $12? This company pays you $30 or $40 for an easy shop - where you get to eat great food - and the report is fairly easy and not too long. I would do this shop twice a month if I could. Sherri.
A whole lot pay more than $8 or $12 and a whole lot of restaurant shops reimburse hard cold cash. From your other post I understand that gift cards work for you. For many of us that is NOT an acceptable form of payment.
I am so not interested in a gift card. If I am going to write a report, give me back the money I spent. It may work for some people (light eaters, solo eaters, low cost of living, etc.) But you can not get out of CF here for what they are paying with two people and the ordering requirements. Even if you could, I really only like the Cheesecake. I want cash. :-)

Another company here has the same model, only they send me a gift card in advance, so I can use it to pay for my food. I really like that. This way I get a free meal AND I don't have to wait for them to reimburse me.
I just wonder what would happen if they decided to reject my shop. Would I have to pay them back...
Shop-a-holic: What company are you referring to? I'm very interested because I have done the Cheesecake shops, but hate waiting for a lame gift card. Getting a gift card in advance would be more worth it...
I used to do Cheesecake, but have not due to the gift cards...I would however, and send the GC to my daughter, since I go there now and then. The Company here has three names starting with a C......unless they changed this year!!

This was not a shop at Cheesecake factory. It was at another restaurant. The MSP was Service Savvy. They don't have a job board, so the shop was scheduled through Palm Scheduling.
I also enjoy these shops and don't mind the gift card. Once you get the first one, you have a gift card for the next one and a gift card for the next one and so on. If you enjoy the shop and the restaurant, it is like having a standing 90-day reservation for a meal. The report is intuitive and very simple and the food - well - it's TASTY!
That's the key, Michael. If you like to frequent the restaurant, the shop is a decent deal for the time involved. I wish it were more generous, but it is what it is.

The shops here in L.A. get scheduled every month, so obviously enough shoppers find it worth the gift card they offer now. I've tired of the menu over the years and miss the days when I could actually get some gas money out of the shop.
Whoaaaa! Although I said I would never work for a giftcard, I did it. My son invited me to Cheesecake Factory; I accepted and moved to check my other e-mails. Surprise: a Cheesecake Factory shop offer! Knowing I was going anyway, I decided to pick up a $30 gift card. It was my first time at Cheesecake Factory. I thought it was OK, both sons LOVED it. The report wasn't bad and I picked up a $30 gift card (haven't received it yet). This company did have payment problems, but hopefully, they will be prompt sending a gift card. I wouldn't do this shop for the gift card and wouldn't plan a special trip there for a shop but I would take the shop again if I happened to be going there anyway.
I did one because CF just opened their first location here, and my wife and I were eager to check it out anyway. My only regret about doing it for a gift card is that it's on the other side of town and the food wasn't good enough to justify a trip back and wait for a table.

I got the gift card within 30 days as promised, and it's sitting in my wallet, in case we should find out way out there again sometime.
But as MM said, you will have a gift card to use for the next shop. Reimbursement in advance!

Edited - this was in response to AustinMom's post.

Flash, I have NEVER had a company reimburse with cold hard cash.....have I overlooked something?

I as well love my Cheesecake factory, grew up with them starting out in a shack just baking cheesecake's, and watching them grow has been fun, wish I'd bought their stock. Depends on what you order, I always manage, a salad is under $10.00, share a very large piece of cheesecake and you can make it. No hard drinks of course.

Do you take your reimbursement in peanuts and pretzels?

Amen! I want cash or at minimum, full reimbursement.
The Cheesecake Factory here is really pretty good, and I wouldn't hesitate to go again. But $30 reimbursement is low for this shop and gift card is not payment I really want. I would never schedule this shop again to get the gift card, I will only do it again, if, like this time, I learned I was going there anyway and the shop just happened to be available so I was picking up $30 for something I was going to do anyway.
Understood. CF seems to make a bigger impression for prom dates and 20 somethings, than it does with me. The last time I went, the mahi mahi was very good, but the service was dreadful. It's not a shop/restaurant I want to work for as a means to go there again.
