A heads up about Grassroots Visa Card....

Recently I tried to use my Grassroots Visa card at a store and it was declined. I logged on and found that the card had been "closed." I was confused because the expiration date on the card was 2015. I inquired and found out that I had mistakenly overdrawn the account by 0.26 so they closed the card. A new card is being issued and they charge $7.50 for a new card. That stinks! It is my fault, but I thought that if I didn't have enough money on the card it would not accept the transaction. It's a pre-paid card, so I'm not sure how I could overdraw it.

Just wanted to let others know so this doesn't happen to them smiling smiley

Thanks for the heads up, Phoebe70. I recently received an invite to register with this company but I have not yet. Aren't they a merchandising company as opposed to a MSC? And they only pay with Visa pre-paid cards? I am not a fan of that form of payment.

I do work for them here and there. They are a MSC. I do the restaurant shop. They pay with a gift card (for the same restaurant) the other shop they have (in my area) they do pay with a visa card. I don't like that either. First the shop you are required to spend $20 in the store (most of the time you have to take a little kid with you) and the pay for the shop is only $20 (visa card) that's not worth it to me.

However, the one I do for them they pay $40 (or $30 depending on the shop) no matter how much you spend. Requirements are small (appetizer and beverage) and you can split your check. I bring a friend who pays her own way. You are also able to use the gift card for future shops.

They are super flexible in the scheduling, you can call anytime and get just about any visit date you want.

It's not a staple of my income but it's good for girls night out and I really like the restaurant.

O.o o.O

Happily shopping New England and beyond!!!!!
Kathee70, thanks for the info. I know you can not name the client but can you tell me what type of food the restaurant offers? Like Mexican vs. Italian or quick serve vs fine dining.

I would not use the Visa card, I received one and read the small print. There is a yearly charge for this card. Also if I remember that they will or can refill the card. Mine was only for $5. Not worth the effort. I forget what else you had to do.
Wow, a prepaid card should not "overdraw." I just used the last few dollars on my Grass Roots card at a self-checkout register at Home Depot. It only accepted payment for the available balance and I was asked for another form of payment for my balance due. Have you asked GRM to waive the replacement fee?

Shopper8, there is not a fee for this particular card (at least not that the IC is responsible for). I've been using the same reloaded card for a few years.

I believe she is referring to the "dessert manufacturer" casual dining restaurant chain. Famous for an extensive martini list as well as their decadent cream cheese-based desserts.

I have not used my Visa card for quite a while but in my area it is used mainly to send bonus money to me. There are infrequent bonuses these days. I evidently do not do whichever shops pay by visa card. But I have had their visa card for several years and when I do use it have no problems. This company I find to be very nice...When my gift card from their restaurant got "misappropriated" as a tip which was more than the meal cost the company investigated and made me good. I did not discover the problem until I tried to use my $27 leftover gc balance several months later to pay for the next shop I did and found my balance was $0. I doubt too many other companies would investigate and give me the money back.
Thanks, Jen. I think I know which chain you are talking about. And I am probably one of the few people who do not like their food. I think their entrees have way too much sodium and even their salads are very fattening. And I am not a big dessert-eater.

Grassroots will not waive the $7.50 replacement card fee for me. Bummed because I do quite a bit of shops for them, and the reimbursement for the kids shops is $20, so $7.50 is quite a chunk of that. Oh well. Lesson learned. I'm still confused how I could overdraw on the card, though.
Shop2Live, you do not have to order dessert on those shops and they now have a skinny menu which has less calories...not sure about the salt content....
Yes, their skinny menu is really good. I usually don't have room for the dessert, although those are good too.
