Hoju, despite your misspelling, do you have any idea how disrespectful and offensive some of us old-enough-to-be-your-grandmother-or-great-grandmother find your posting: "I will totally kiss every one of those sweet ol' bitty's..."

I realize I can only speak for myself and I realize we come from different generations, however I find it completely unnecessary and, well quite offensive and disrespectful.

Yikes, Hoju. Did you mean "biddy"? You may be thinking it is just another word for elderly woman, but actually it is a derogatory term referring to a meddlesome, annoying, nasty old woman.

Also, the possessive form HAD to be an autocorrect. I would never have done that.

But more importantly- I had no idea that's what that meant. Again, apologies. I'm gonna go ahead and fix that mess.

No problem, Hoju. I've made a similar - but far worse mistake.

I used to think the term "schmuck" was just another term for jerk and used it when I was doing public speaking engagements about scams and cons for my police department. After one such seminar, I was approached by a grinning older man who asked, "You're not Jewish, are you?"

"No," I replied. "Why do you ask?"

He said, "Because a schmuck is the piece of left over skin that the rabbi throws away when after he has performed a circumcision."

He walked away chortling, and I never used that term again (in public speaking).

That's gross... but realistically, your use of that term is something that's become commonplace. It may ALSO be used to describe what he said, but nowadays "schmuck" has more than one meaning.

Still, knowing what it originally meant, I'd probably stop using it, too.

That guy was having some fun with you. My Jewish friends have always used the English variation for jerk or something similar. It appears the origin of the word is Yiddish slang for penis, not foreskin. It is referenced on several dictionary sites and was what I have been told many times over the years.

Maybe the old guy wasn't entirely wrong. Perhaps the rabbi he knew was a little shaky and took it all off?
