Pizza shop

The shop is call in, carryout. When I called the establishment, the employee instructed me to go online and order because they are offering a promotion for getting a free pizza. I referred back to the shop, it didn't say DO NOT order online, so I followed the instruction of the employee. Now the scheduler says they can't pay even though they have emailed me back and forth at least 8 times for the pictures for different angles, different lighting, etc
Just now he tells me because it was ordered online that they can't pay. I told him I did as the employee asked because I didn't want to reveal my identity my declining a free item. He says it wouldn't have been odd at all to decline the free offer. In what parallel universe would someone turn down a free item of the same thing you are already ordering?

You're on a diet and don't need the extra food. Also you have both the client and MSC in your title (much less your post).

You could have said that you don't have access to a computer.

Pls remove either the name of the client or the msc. You can't name both in the same post, per the forum rules.
Or you live alone and don't have room in your freezer for an extra pizza.

There are many reasons...you just need to open your mind and get creative in thinking of them.

Exactly, or something like, "I'm on the road and want to pick it up on my way home;Ordering over the phone is easier, but thanks for letting me know."

If it's a call-in shop, I'd never place my order online.
I don't believe it's suspicious at all to say you don't have access to a computer, let alone, the internet. In what parallel universe would you assume that everyone has access to the internet or prefers to ordering online vs. phone?

Exactly. This is like saying it'd be OK to order inside the store if a crew member stated the drive-thru was closed for a Drive-Thru assignment...

This was my first one. I appreciate everyone's kind suggestions. I just didn't think it was so wrong, but learned something!

While the MSC's usually have some leniency when some guidelines are missed / incorrect for a shop, this is an example when missing this guideline voids the assignment altogether.

Try not to constantly think about getting ID'd as a shopper so much. Focus as much as you can to stick with the guidelines instead.

I personally quickly weigh both--not getting ID'd and adhering to the guidelines--before I respond. It helps that I have already gone to their website to view the specials, before I make the call, so I know what might be coming my way. smiling smiley

If the instructions say do not order online then there is just no way I would order online. I would have said I really wasn't computer savvy so I'll pass on the extra pizza.
It sounds like the issue here is that the employee did not "instruct" you to go online but instead suggested you go online. As Tarantado mentioned above it is important to follow all instructions whenever possible in mystery shopping. The fact that they did not say you cannot order online is not what you should be looking for. You need to pay attention to what they did say and it sounds like they did say it was a call in/carryout shop.
If this is the same company I work with they also have online order shops and delivery shops and a few other scenerios. They really want you to do the scenario you are assigned. My scheduler generally gives me online order shops as the deals are better there and I asked about that. Try asking if you can have one of those next time they are available and you will be able to get the free deals.
There are many dining shops that can be invalidated by accepting additional items. Heplful employees can screw up shops in all kinds of ways.
