Goodwin Hospitality Shops

Is it just in my area that they offer a flat fee, rather than a shop fee plus reimbursement? If what I spend on the shop is completely covered with some left to be considered a 'shop fee', then I guess it might be worth it. My other issue is that if it's just a flat fee, then I'm taxed on that whole fee, where normally, I would not be taxed on what I spent because it was reimbursed.

Am I reading it right?

No, you are not taxed on the entire amount. You subtract the required expense on your Schedule C when you file your income tax. What you stated is a common misconception which has been dealt with many times on this forum. It doesn't matter if it is a flat fee with required purchases, or a fee with reimbursement. The tax consequences are exactly the same. And it doesn't matter if you make less than $600 from an MSC, you still have to report the amount you receive as income. Then you report expenses, including required expenses, mileage, paper, staples, ink, etc. You pay tax on the net profit.

Goodwin rarely pays anything other than a flat fee. Figure out the cost of the required purchase and subtract from the flat fee. If it makes sense for you to do it, then you do it. If not, pass.

Thank you! I just read that same thing on another post! Good to know that they usually just go the flat fee route.

Thanks for the info!
I’m not signed with Goodwin. But I get a lot of job offers from Summit. It seems that several lately have been on behalf of Goodwin Hospitality.

Do they use Summit for all their scheduling or just some of it?

In my area, it's a mix of the two. Both Summit and Goodwin are great to work with. They're responsive and quick to address any clarification questions I have.

I get scheduling offers directly from the MSC and from iSecretShop. Everything I've done for them has been fee only. They pay reliably in good time and have been great to work with. Thumbs up from me.
Myst4au,

If you earn less than $600 a year in total then you do not have to claim it. So for many part time shoppers it does make a difference between reimbursement shops and fee only. Writing off business expenses can be complicated, depending on how one decides to document their role as a shopper.

Um, what? You do have to claim it. If you are a hobbyist, then you can't write off business expenses. But either way, it is income and you have to claim it. The "$600 or less" is only relevant for the MSC, because under $600 they are not required to send you a 1099. However, it is the individual's responsibility to report all income whether they received a statement for it or not.
That is simply not true. It is income. You have to pay taxes on income. The only difference is that you don't get a 1099 form. You still have to report the income to the IRS.

Except when they offer a bonus + the flat fee, which happens alot in my area.

Good to know that it is possible. I have never seen one in this area, but I will start asking. All they can do is say no.

Here (suburban Chicago) it looks like they offer reasonably good bowling and restaurant shops on their own Prophet system and offer some pretty marginal kiddie entertainment shops through iSecretShop. The flat fee on the kiddie entertainments looks like it won't cover the admission plus food costs. I wondered if Goodwin was embarrassed to put them on their own website. moody smiley
they also do movie theater shops as I did one in NW Indiana a week ago.
