I went to a Roy Rogers on the Atlantic City Expressway about 2 weeks ago and it was one of about 5 FF operations which all shared a common HMSHost cashier and I got a HMSHost receipt Their name tags said HMSHost. They had a small subset of the original Roy Rogers menu, and it was mediocre.
Autogrill of Italy which is the dominant travel plaza operator in Europe bought HMS in 1999. Until 1996, HMS and the Marriott hotel chain were part of a single company.dating back to 1897. HMS only lasted 3 years as an independent company, and is now HMSHost.
The Roy Rogers restaurant saga is a sad one. Founded by Marriott in 1968 under license from THE Roy Rogers, it grew to 6509 locations in the Northeast, Middle Atlantic States, and as far south as NC (there was one in Chapel Hill in the mid 1970s). In 1990, they sold it to Hardees, which converted them to Hardees. The conversion met with resistance and consumer revolt, and Hardees tried to recover by converting them back to Roy Rogers, but it failed and they sold the locations to McD, Boston Market, and Wendy's. It is convoluted, but the chain is now growing again under a new owner. [
