Ellis deactivation

After 10 years and 700+ shops

Unexpected email from Ellis:
Ellis Partners has made the decision to no longer utilize your services as an independent contractor. I have removed you from any current shop contracts. Please discontinue any efforts to complete further work. Your account has been inactivated.

my reply
an explanation would be nice...

their reply:
As you know,  with apartment shops it's more challenging to maintain anonymity than with other types of shops,  especially after a long time, working in the same geographic area, and having conducted the considerable number of shops you have. We feel it is in the best interests of the program to not use you as a shopper for our clients any longer.  We wish you the best in your other endeavors.

my reply:
I don't think I have ever been outed. Doesn't the 18 month rule* prevent this? Unless there is another reason for deactivating me, I would still like to work with you.

their reply:
Thank you for your interest and feedback, but our decision is final.

* can't shop same apartment for 18 months...(over the years I have shopped the same ones 3-4 times)

Nice, eh?

Probably after 700+ shops, everyone in your area knows you.

It was a nice email, but I'm sure it was disappointing to get it. If you only like apartment shops, there are plenty out there. Do you only perform apartment shops? Have you considered doing the senior living shops? I'd imagine it is the same sort of report.
"nice" was facetious...only apartment and new home shops, have a pv500...Intellishop has the most senior living shops, done a couple before realizing how underpaying and demanding they are
I think everyone understood your sarcasm when you said "nice." If you've shopped the same communities 3 or 4 times, you're a known quantity. After 10 years, you have saturated EPMS' market. It was a nice letter. You had a great run. Time to move on.

Are you talking traditional mystery shops or strictly video shops? I know that video shops are a totally different beast
Am I reading this correctly that the OP only does apartment and new home shops?

That seems counter productive to me.

I don't know how many apartment complexes are in your area, but that works out to 70 shops a year. If most of your shops are in your home area, I don't see how it would be possible to keep your cover intact for that long regardless of the 18 month rotation.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm surprised they lasted this long!

I've probably done 70 or less shops for Ellis over the last seven years and maybe an additional 30 for other companies around here. Three times I've ended up with the same agent. One had no clue, one I was afraid recognized me until she didn't bother to follow up and the third recognized my face from another complex over two years prior. Since the last one mentioned our previous meeting right away, and a long enough time had elapsed, I was able to cover by changing up my story. I told her I had spent the time between at another apartment and was dissatisfied.

Not to mention the databases. You can only use so many aliases attached to your license.

I run into problems with phone numbers not aliases or email addresses. A woman can use any last name she likes by saying she is going through or has just gotten divorced.

I understand being shopped out, just did not appreciate the way it was done, kinda like
"cuz we said so", and I had to press for an explanation...not that I was expecting a gold watch or anything, but it is typical of the way they communicate/don'tcommunicate with their shoppers, I'm am of the opinion. I can take criticism, and welcome it as well for improvement's sake, do it right or not at all yadayadayada......And whoever is surprised that I only did 70 shops a year on average, and could many more, well I'm an old geezer who's I.Q. has been overtaken by age ha....(but really don't need the dough, need to keep sharp and busy).

Can you tell where you are located? I'm in a large metro area. I'm now concerned because I have 12 years under my belt and just over 500 shops.
I would like to think that it wasn't just you. Maybe they cleaned out their database of shoppers who met certain criteria. That was a crummy way to do it, however.
Lisa, I chose not to do that because I didn't want it to happen.

Well, guess what.

For shops where it wouldn't impact me being the decision maker I've also claimed to be newly married. I can see it working for apartments. The spouse could have a job involving travel or even living in another city during the week so they are happy to leave the decision to you.

I agree, an email saying they won't be needing your services anymore and not explaining why really makes you wonder, and want to ask, what you did and how you can resolve it. I think there are quite a few people here who could write dear john/jane (shopper) letters (farken emails) that are generic yet professionally consoling, succinct and yet show an appreciative ending for a great run! Who's in for doing it? And for the OP, I believe bank shops, especially the financial planning ones, would be an easy jump for you. They can keep you on your cerebral toes!
Good to know they at least told you. I've been getting a "no shops" message when I click on the search for contracts near me tab, which seems highly unlikely given that they always have have a few dozen or so. I was late on a shop that was ultimately rejected and have been getting this message for about a week. They haven't gotten back to me to let me know if I've been deactivated or what, but after reading this I hope it's just a glitch. They do some questionable stuff, especially the 1099 fiasco, but the decent pay and plentiful shops makes me want to keep them in my stable.
@#$%&. I've only done 28 shops and they tell me that because I've done so many in person shops they can't use me anymore due tot their clients keeping a database of those who visit. I'm not officially deactivated though, they tell me I'm still active and shops that I'm eligible for will show up under the contracts near me tab.

@#$%&!!!
If you have only been shopping for a year or so, you have hit rotation. They require a minimum of 18 months. One thing I really like about them, when you take a shop they provide a list of all previous aliases, phone numbers and email addresses used for that client across all their communities.

Less than a year, actually. I started shopping for them in November of 2016. While I didn't enjoy their repetitive boiler plate style reports, the pay was pretty good for that space. I'll miss them. Anyone recommend any other similar kind of companies that might operate in the Pacific NW?
Senior Living shops are just like Apartment shops. i have stopped doing apartment shops for a long time now. I just finished doing a senior living shop for Intelli-shop. The low-ball payment is something I will never take again. The narrative was too long and requests to burp out more information numerous times was more than I will do again. This is one of my never again assignments. If you like torture, then go for these types of shops. Be careful as to what assignments you will take; whether they are apartment or senior living shops.
>And whoever is surprised that I only did 70 shops a year on average...

I think they were surprised (as I was) that you do that many, not "only" 70.

70 shops a year, or roughly 6 per month, seems very possible with a 30 or even 60 day wait, but an 18-month wait!? Yikes. Then again I am not familiar with the company; maybe they have a massive amount of work? Anyway, hope you find another company even better to replace them.
One senior one, not Ellis is now requiring pics inside and you must ask permission. Yeah sure oh can I take a pic to show my mom in case she wants to move here.... they are getting bolder.
@CANADAMOMMY I don't think that's unusual. I took pics when I was looking for an apt recently. Although I wonder what they would do if you ask permission and they decline. It might be weird if they ask you to photograph weird things, but I can hardly even think of something I wouldn't want a picture of for comparison.
I've done 80 shops for them in the last eight months.... If I'm doing this ten years from now, I'd hate to lose Ellis like that.... I can create as many different email addresses as I need... GoogleVoice allows me to get new phone numbers periodically for a whopping 10 bucks.... My goal is to be unmemorable enough each visit that I'm not remembered should I encounter the same agent again...

Hard work builds character and homework is good for your soul.
ShopWhisperer, 6 a month is a lot for apartments. It is always better to hold back. Being recognized a year or 18 months later is not a big deal because it makes sense someone unhappy with their choice before would be looking again.

I have actually done a couple of those senior living shops requiring photographs. Piece of cake. My "loved one" has a hard time getting around so I am checking out local communities. Once we have it narrowed down to just two or three, she will visit. "Do you mind if I take some pics to help her decide?" People take pictures of everything these days. Nobody has batted an eye. In fact, one suggested some shots I didn't really need.
