NSS...Out of business, Owner died/ For recapped short version see pinned thread on page 1 by LisaSTL

Mod note: Post removed as it breached the Forum guideline which states, "Do not reveal the clients of mystery shopping companies". Additionally, it is usually an ICA violation to name both the MSC and client.

lladrocoll, start reading this thread from at least page 13 to the end. Spoiler alert: NSS is out of business.
You are very lucky they owe me over $1,800 closer to 1900 of which $1,018 is my own money

Hey guys and gals. I was with NSS for about 5 years. A few late checks and one missing one, but it all worked out. I have no clue when I will get my money from the shops for March, April and May. But i am owed about 700 bucks. I want my money.

Can anyone give me a break down of the last 19 pages of this forum? I simply cannot read that much.
The owner died. The courts have not yet geared up. We may or may not ever see our money. At least we can write it off on taxes if we don't get it.

You and others may already know this, but there is often the misconception that a tax write off is a dollar for dollar savings in the amount of taxes due. Actually the tax write off reduces the amount of one's taxable income so the tax savings depends on one's tax bracket. If one is in a 15% bracket that's all that would be recovered in reduced taxes owed. So it softens the blow, but not by much.

Responding to the mod note here.

Seeing as the company NSS is not paying us they are terminating the ICA agreement with us which means that we can't violate it as it is already terminated?

Or is that not the case.
We all know what pizza shops were posted by NSS. So you can talk about pizza but not the name of the company that made the pizza. We are honoring our ICA agreements.

Regardless of whether or not it violates the ICA signed with a now-defunct company, it still breaches the forum guidelines.
I am owed for April shops, thank you for the information on how to proceed!

Even if someone reads the last 4 pages they will get this:

The owner died, NSS is closed, and there will be a very long wait for any money with a good chance of never getting paid.

y would u let $$ owed & ypur own $$ spent get so high. not good biz sense.
Hi! I shopped several shops for NSS, but did not receive payments. I have also tried to call / email, but with no luck. I see that many of you are having the same issues. What happens when mystery shopping companies go bankrupt? Are they not legally bound to pay us for our shops that we've done?
Hrocha - Read the sticky tab which will update you on what is going on. The company did NOT go bankrupt but the owner did die. Until things are sorted out in probate, we do not know if NSS will be considered part of the estate or not or who, if anyone, will be sorting out the NSS affairs.
It is more common than you think. When a shopper has a long term relationship with a company that has never even paid a day late, why would they not take the work? Many of us have put out large sums of money for routes and something unforeseeable happening to a company could mean losing that much or more. Shoppers need to remember to at least take the loss as a deduction on their taxes.

Good point. I did the mental math when they weren't answering phones late last summer and when my reports would get rejected then approved when I'd resend in the same exact pics. Incompetence there just compounded my suspicion. Further, it seems that was right about the time they started stringing out payments to shoppers. My last shop in November (11/2) showed a December pay date on the website, but it was nearly February when that check arrived! I am pretty sure I caught myself wondering if NSS forgot to pay me sometime around October, which I think that month's check came after Christmas. Moving the payment goal posts is a no go for me!

I understand human nature is "it's all good" until one gets burned up close and personal, but some folks need to take hints. I've been burned by a few too many MF attempts to reject shops and other MSCs jamming me with "we're not sure why we rejected your shop!" in favor of pleasing the client to give anything but doubt when I get that funny gut feeling these days. I don't live off of shopping anymore, but if I did, you better believe I'd rethink an MSC THE INSTANT my money was to come back a month late.

I have been shopping for 8 years next month, 3,000 shops later, I have never flaked, had a shop rejected or not been paid by a MSC. I am detailed, follow directions and the only "hint" that I got was when my March payment didn't arrive by the 12th of May like it always has each month for the last 4 years with NSS. I was told that I should receive my check by the end of May. It wasn't until early June that the phones were disconnected. I did 78 shops for NSS during March, April and May. It is business. I have mailed all my documents and requested payment . I will have to wait for the outcome. I will be lucky to get 10 cents on the dollar, if that. Good luck to everyone and I am so sorry that we were all involved with someone being so selfish and hurting so many others.

I posted this good news on the other NSS thread, for those that missed it...I received my full payment by check yesterday July 13th.

Plmccut....no, I never did the pizza jobs, this was for a restaurant I have done for them for years in different locations. I did their retail and this restaurant, never pizza, but this is definitely a good sign and they are redeemed.....

I was thinking the same thing!
If checks are being mailed from CA, it makes sense that a CA shopper would receive theirs first. USPS is about a day to deliver from N CA to S CA.

PS-I've posted this update on a couple of fb pages. We'll see if anyone else has been paid.

Look what I found when I searched Howard Troxel, Colorado - the heading was "National Shoppng Service Network" and this blurb was below that:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Credentials

Jerry Goodwin and Howard Troxel founded J&K Shopping Service as a Colorado-based regional mystery shopping company in 1986. In 1990 they founded the National Shopping Service Network, LLC (NSSN) in order to spread their mystery shopping business to a national/international level. Both companies provide multi-industry mystery shopping, as well as customer service and integrity audits. NSSN handles all of the surveys and merchandising.

The founders have extensive experience in customer service, customer satisfaction measurement, consumer data gathering, integrity evaluations, hospitality industries, business consulting, education, new business development, program implementation and community service.

If Irene received a check - that sounds encouraging -- but odd since an executor was being named the end of the month. Boy I really need my money all of the almost $1900! I hope this is not a false alarm for us. I am skeptical. I hope others post if they receive a check. Nothing has changed on the website. It still shows March payment as issued....but I never received it.

The executor was being appointed to administer the personal estate. It is possible either the business was handled differently or these two were somehow related to the business all along. They may have needed to handle other legalities before moving forward. At least it is a positive sign there may be a resolution sooner rather than later.

Irene-- Did you send the company a demand for payment?
Thanks and congratulations!
I did nothing but wait it out...I trusted them and felt compassion due to the unusual circumstances .Estate's always take time. Personally, I don't feel a letter makes a difference, they will get to it when Estate is settled.
Read what plmcutt wrote above, great investigating work and interesting article.
