Shipping a box from Office Depot.... no brown wrapping paper allowed?

Has anyone ever encountered the "policy" at Office Depot that prohibited you from shipping a box wrapped in the heavy-duty brown paper material?

Two employees at my Office Depot told me it was the store/company policy to not allow the brown paper because of a liability if it rips. The employees said that the wrapping could rip and a shipping label could be lost.

Would you say that your package was "rejected" for this type of shop, even though it had nothing to do with the actual contents of the box?

Thanks for any insights you have! I'm waiting to hear back from the MSC about this question.

I haven't ever encountered that, but I am going to guess the MSC will not consider the package as rejected since it had nothing to do with the contents of the package. They will probably want you to use a regular box without paper and reshop the location. Let us know what they say.

I agree with this.
I haven't heard back yet, but I submitted the report. My package would have been sent by Office Depot if it had not been for this hiccup. I went through all the question steps and the lady accepted it. At least it's good to know about this paper-wrapping issue in case I ever ship for personal reasons or other shops.

If a re-shop is needed, I wonder if that means new pay and new re-imbursement would be given?
Most places no longer accept paper wrapped packages, in my experience. Automated processing equipment gets clogged and or rips the paper. Addresses get lost that way. Contents as well.

Anytime I've ever had to do a reshop, the first shop was rejected with no pay or reimbursement. If the second shop is accepted, you will get paid and reimbursed for that but not the first. At least that's been my experience. It stings a bit. Maybe you will get lucky and they will accept the first shop.
A post office told me the same thing. The package has to be encased in clear shipping tape if you use brown paper and the reason they gave me was if the paper tears, it mucks up & breaks their machines.
It would be great if the msc added this information to their list of acceptable and non acceptable packaging. Thanks for the heads up. I hope your shop gets handled in your favor.
If this was a hazmat shop and you followed the rest of the instructions, it probably would have been approved without much thought. I've had a few hazmat packages refused for shipping but the clerk gave a reason different than expected. They were both accepted for pay without further question. As for the paper, I'll be watching this closely. I ship throughout LA and OC using paper wrapped boxes for the regular box shops and have never had a postal worker tell me they weren't allowed. I can understand the reasons it's not advisable and not preferred.
If I use brown paper on a package I make sure to tape up EVERY seam so there's nothing for the mechanical sorting machines to catch onto.

Well, so far my assignment status is "OK to pay," without any follow-up from the MSC. The scheduler only said brown paper is ok. smiling smiley

Agreed. I HAVE used brown paper on top of boxes for whatever reason. And I make absolutely sure, like KathyG stated, to tape up EVERY seam and corner and anywhere else that I think the brown paper could get ripped. I've never had one refused so far, be it for a shop or personal shipping. Now these have all been at USPS facilities...I have no experience shipping packages with brown paper at any other sort of shipping facility.
I also use the brown paper wrapping at the USPS and have had only one person say I should not use the brown paper. She did accept the package and I was paid.
I get a lot of hazardous material shipped to me from Arizona and sometimes the package has come open and the letter carrier asks why I get rocks in the mail and I tell them that they are for my zen garden.
