Even with a car charger and a power box, I'm lucky to get 6-7 a day in. I bought a digital camera too, and a set of batteries lasts about 2 stations, I've tried lithium-ion, Energizer, the works. The phone is kept on the charger in the car but is also used for GPS.
A few things that might be causing the problem:
1. Check your charging system. If your car has a USB plug it is probably a very slow charger. Most are. If you are using one of those things that plug into your car power outlet with USB ports on it there's a chance it is also a very slow charger. With those things you get what you pay for. Buy a good one but even then they can be meh. I have one that charges great and 1 that barely charges. If you are using a car adapter made for your phone then it should charge fast and you have another problem.
2. Google maps is a power hog. If you use a slow charger Google Maps will consume power at a faster rate than a slow charger can recharge. Even a better charger will barely keep up with it. If #1 doesn't fix your problem or you can't find a way to fast charge in your car then I suggest stopping Google Maps for long stretches with no turns, or where you are familiar with them.
3. Your phone may be old enough that the battery has worn out and it just can't store enough power to last a whole day with heavy use.
4. External batteries are similar to car chargers. Expensive ones are great and cheap ones aren't. I have a Samsung one that will fast charge my phone, I have a cheap one that was given away as a promo that's 2x the size of the Samsung but will only charge slowly.
I did a route of Citgos every quarter for 2 1/2 years. I took photos, did the report, and submitted them onsite. At times I would do close to 30 in a day and did not run out of battery.
