I got something like a 65 for my first shop since I did not realize what Coyle style was. Then I started to get 100's on the reports. They could give you another shop, especially one of those cafeteria ones.
I got a 7 on my first evaluation (that was back when the scale was 1-10) and I had a whole host of screw ups... including asking for food to go, not doing stuff in their format, etc. Honestly, the fact that you have enough concern to post here asking this question shows you as a conscientious and thoughtful shopper - and that speaks volumes. I think they will give you another shop... though it might not be a super desirable one.
Regarding cash - yea, that's always the way. You just have to say "I want to pay cash please." It's not awkward, honest. The only way that you can get away with not paying cash is if the location doesn't take cash (which is rare, though does happen).

Oh yes, I definitely understand what they expect now. Hopefully I'll be able to try it again!

USE THOSE! I word everything exactly the same in my reports and now I consistently get 100s. I think I've brought my score up to a 94 from like a 64. I get hotel evals and restaurant evals and almost always get what I apply for.

Very smart thing to do. Saves you a lot of time.
Does Coyle provide a grade on every single report? I received an email with a rating for two reports, but no feedback on three others that were marked ok to pay.
I have had the same thing happen also, where it's marked "okay to pay" and I don't get the emailed report. They seem to be inconsistent with sending score reports. I get the reports about 60-70% of the time.
They might subtract the bar portion from the reimbursement.
When the instructions insist on paying in cash and the staff prefer credit, I say that my card was compromised or stolen and that I am waiting for a new card. I never have had an issue after using this line.
As a customer, you have a right to pay cash unless the establish prohibits cash transactions. You don't need an excuse. Just say, "I'll like to cash this out please," and set cash on the bar.
I don't understand what the issue is. Unless the guidelines state you must pay by CC or cash, what precludes you from paying via your preference?
If you look at the OP's first pot, you will see that the OP was supposed to pay with cash and instead paid with a CC. There might have been (my speculation) an integrity portion of the bar portion of the shop, nd paying wiht a CC would begate that.

Virtually all of the dinner evaluations do a cash integrity evaluation at the bar. A key to success for MSing in general is not letting your expectations of how a customer should act get in the way of performing the assignment as requested. Pay in cash, ask for a receipt with room service, don't accept a room upgrade, etc. All are common occurrences with Coyle that you have to get used to going along with.

Back then, it was a small company and Jim Coyle himself sent it back to me to re-write, and gave me a second chance. I botched my second assignment by drinking too much at the bar and he gave me a second-second chance by allowing me to go back the following night and repeat the assignment.

I honesty wouldn't worry too much about getting another shop for Coyle. I only did one shop for them and likely will never to another, because other mystery shop companies pay more for less information. In my case, it was an apartment shop that paid about half about what Ellis paid for shops in the same area -- and Coyle needed considerably more information. If memory serves, I did score an 85 or 89 in that shop, with Coyle only asking me for some additional minor details. Still, I have never seen another Coyle shop since that I thought was worth the time and effort. (Note: I do realize they have some very high-end shops, but again don't think their other shops are worth the time and effort).

I've done several shops for them, always with a mediocre evaluation. Having a strong writing background, and having done many restaurant shops for other companies, I felt I would be able to be a successful shopper for them. Nope! I just quit replying to job openings and it is too difficult to meet their subjective reviews.
I had done about 4 dinner shops and one hotel shop with pretty good scores when they assigned me a cruise shop. I was not prepared for the time required both on the ship and later in reporting and got edit after edit emails and did not get a good grade. They still paid me and I have done several dinner shops and another hotel shop after. Boy did I learn a lot from that shop.

This probably belongs under a new topic, but may I ask how hotel, resort, and cruise shops work? Does the MSC reimburse travel and all the expenses required? Do they make the travel arrangements and then pay for the evals? I'm just curious how that works. I have seen several hotel or resort shops that are a significant distance from me and figured they would most likely not be worth the travel expense on my end.

It is a whole different topic, but a lot is covered under different Coyle threads on this forum, in Shopmetrics and in the Coyle Resource Center as well.
There's a variety of methods used, so there's not a simple answer. Some hotels reverse while others reimburse. Some offer a varying travel reimbursement and others only pay a straight fee.

Up until that point and every one after, I had reversal of hotel charges. This one they reimbursed me for and they didn't tell me that it was a competitor cruise until after I submitted everything. It would have made things a million times easier if I would have known that, that names, descriptions, etc were not really necessary, just the service. They have a cap on how much travel is reimbursed, so you have to see if you can get there for a price that is less or if you're ok with eating the additional expense.

Hey! I saw on one of your posts that you're based in Seattle and so am I. I wanted to know if you had any tips on getting started with larger hotel shops? I've only done higher end restaurant shops so far.

I've given up asking Coyle for assignments. I have asked for almost a year and never been assigned anything. I sent an email requesting guidance and got only a generic response. I can fill my plate with other companies and will continue to do so.
Their grading seem to differ wildly depending on the grader. I had more than 20 points swing even though I wrote with same style and effort. And I didn't get deducted for missing shop details.
