company used a couple of names and I received package 1 month after date on shop information

I am brand new, have not completed a shop.. I received an email saying I had received a package, which I hadn't.
Later I received a package with a large check. I was told to deposit it and complete the purchase of gift cards within 48 hours. I don't have that kind of money. The bank said it could take 5+ days to clear.

Then again, the name of company and individual seemed different on the check and package, so I assumed it was not a legitimate shop. I sent a text mentioning the name. I received a text saying the name was Ardent (sp. Ardant). Researching on the Internet I received advice not to purchase gift cards and not to deposit a check for the first time shopper. Any advice would be helpful.

This is a total SCAM. If you deposit the check, it will bounce -- but it won't bounce until after you've spent the money.
Definitely a scam. No legitimate MS assignment for a new shopper pays any money in advance. You did well to avoid disaster! Scammers often hide behind the names of legitimate MS companies.
