Do you know that pimps and prostitutes can be considered sex offenders? Do you know that men who buy sex from prostitutes can also be put on the registry?
I know of one man who I worked with doing free phones that was charged (as a first offender) because at one time during his "using" days he was picked up by a mother of a teenage daughter (he was homeless). She got him drunk and high and then left him to watch her teenage daughter who had accused another boyfriend of her mother's of rape. She was a fast teenager and came into the room improperly dressed and came on to him. He did not know about the conflicts going on between mother and daughter and succumbed while drunk and high. She asked him to cover for her for something with her mother and he refused. So she hollered rape again. He was charged with Statutory rape. While he was incarcerated Georgia changed the registry laws so they decided to change his charge to child molestation. (so they could try and keep him on the registry longer). The judge never removed his first offender status, though. It is the only charge he has ever been charged within his life. Within a few years, probation removed all of his conditions, (being close to schools, etc). He can live wherever he wants. He has successfully discharged his probation. In a couple more years he can ask the judge to take him completely off the registry. Under your presumptions, you think he should not be able to rent an apartment or be near a school. What if he had a child that needed to be picked up from school? Under your presumptions, he should not be able to pick up his child from school. But the probation department said he was not a predator. He can not take his kids to the carnival or Disneyland. (He doesn't have small kids so he doesn't have to worry about this) but if he did? FYI he has been clean and sober now for about 10 years. He doesn't go anywhere but to work and home. He doesn't have friends, he doesn't hang out. He will barely go out to eat. When he goes somewhere and someone comes in with a bunch of kids, he's ready to get up and leave.
I just think that labeling the entire group as predators is wrong. Probation doesn't even do this. I'm not saying that being aware is wrong. I'm just saying that I think you should remember that people are individuals and people make mistakes. It doesn't always make them a predator. Do you think that the girl who flashed her chest should be labeled a predator? I wonder how many women at spring break have done this? (I've never been to an event so I don't even know, but judging from the tv It's probably a lot!) From what I understand in New Orleans at Mardi Gras it's also legal. But this same action in another place is considered indecent exposure. In Los Vegas prostitution is legal.
There are jobs that some shoppers are ok with. There are other shops that other shoppers don't want to do. But slamming the MSP for even offering the job like it's such a terrible thing is just crazy. I'll do the OSI at the hotel and you can stand on your feet for 8 hours demonstrating (giving free samples) or do a sizing audit. I can't stand for 8 hours and won't even consider the job. (Just look at the title given to this post!)
There are things I'm scared of but going to a public place to do a job is not one of them. (Unless it's a really bad gas station with gang bangers hanging out and known for shootings). Would you say that all alcoholics should lose their driver's license because some of them drove drunk and killed someone in an accident? So what about the drunk driver who gets out of prison and doesn't drink anymore? Should they lose their license for life?
I think some of the preceding statements were really hateful against an entire group and not against the evil in the individual predators. (Speaking of Evil) Anyone who kills a child intentionally either as a predator or the mother who drove her kids into the lake should be locked up and NEVER EVER be set free! Anyone who cracks the skull of a newborn baby should be locked up. I have no comprehension for child hurters like this. ( I am a mother too.) But I know that most parents won't do this and I don't label all parents as dangerous because of the actions of a few.

I don't want to associate with pimps, prostitutes, or johns. The offenses they committed are sexual by nature, so sure, I guess they could be put on a sex offender list. However, I think the sex offenders most people are concerned about are pedophiles and rapists.

I honestly believe that the cases you are stating make up a small percentile of the people who are on the registry. The exceptions you stated are unfortunate and no, I don't believe that those particular individuals belong on the registry, but I do believe that the majority of people on a sex offender list belong there.

I am not slamming the MSC, but I personally would not want to do this assignment.

Prostitution is NOT legal in Clark County Nevada. Las Vegas is in Clark County. That’s common knowledge, which makes most everything else you say suspect. You clearly are no expert.

And another thing I never said i was an expert I said I have personal experience working directly with them as a correctional officer. This allowed me to be privy to some individualized case histories. I have also worked with ministries that have worked with sex offenders. Did you know that many homeless s o 's have to sleep outside because they can not go to all of the shelters, even though the genders are housed separately?

That's why I like to be able to see their stories. I can make my own judgment. Overwhelmingly, sex offenders don't reoffend (highest reoffenders of sex crimes are rapists - source uky.edu.) It's a red flag to me, however, when there is a large grouping in the same area. I have friends who are on the registry. They're all guilty of their crimes, and all served their time. We were friends before the crimes and are friends afterward. I wouldn't leave my kidlets alone with them, though, regardless of the near-zero chance they'd do something.

The issue is the hotel being a known gathering place for sex offenders. These are people who have failed to reintegrate into society and likely do not have the familial support system they need.

I'm supposed to be upset that PIMPS can be labeled as sex offenders? Seriously? PIMPS? Pimps are awful people. Just wow. This conversation has taken a bizarre turn.

My slamming the MSC was more about the fee. There are a lot of threads slamming them over their fees. The sex-offender motel was just a twist on top of the ridiculously low fee.

By the way, baring your breasts in New Orleans is NOT legal and NOPD will arrest you in a hot minute for it. You see so many videos of idiot tourists doing it because the police can't be everywhere all of the time.

Don't get me started on the PD in Nola. My daughters car was "lost or stolen". She checked regularly with the subcontracted storage facility the police used for this purpose. There was only one yard. Finally three to four months after she reported it stolen she got a bill from the storage yard. They claimed her car had been there the whole time and she owed a significant amt. She had been there in person and had the police check for it multiple times. When she went to pick it up they refused to give her a copy of the report which showed the date it had arrived at the yard. Evidently according to the report which her then boyfriend had snapped a photo of when the officer went out of the room, her car had been reported parked partially blocking a driveway a few blocks away from where she had parked it.She also found out that often if the power dept had to do work on the poles the police would tow the cars to another street so they could access the poles. Multiple other issues with the PD during this time too long to report here.
In any case, two years later she got stopped for driving a stolen car. The policeman who stopped her said he was so amazed that she actually pulled over instead of trying to flee that he did not come out of his car with his gun pointed at her. She had to go down to the PD several times..closed for this or that often during reg business hours. And turned out her car was listed not as stolen but as salvaged. Just one of the nightmares of living in NOLA. But then the parties more than made up for all the bad stuff.

I lived about 4 hours away from New Orleans when I lived in the Florida Panhandle and I have probably been to New Orleans about 25 times (pre-Katrina) or more for concerts, jazz fest, or just for fun. The food, history, and music are awesome. I had friends who lived in Metarie who I used to visit frequently (outskirts of New Orleans) who always said, "New Orleans is a great place to visit but you don't want to live there."

@Sandyf, that is a crazy story! Was your daughter ever able to get the car situation sorted out?

I grew up in New Orleans but haven't lived there since 1998. It definitely has problems with corruption and general ineptness (is that a word?) of government. But dang, it was a fun place to be. All of my friends, save two, have moved across the lake or to Metairie because they just couldn't deal with the city any longer. They go visit to eat, shop, or see the Saints pretty regularly through.

I was so relieved when she finally moved back to California. she loved Nola but got nowhere in terms of any sort of career. Too much fun going on for her to resist. So after 6 years she left but she still wishes she was there. Myself, I could not stand the weather or the wages. For an expensive city in an inexpensive state, the pay is not at all consistent with the cost of living. The only good thing cost of living wise was when Costco finally opened there.
