ACL - so sad my sweet scheduler has been laid off.

It appears they laid off quite a few staff. I hope things will pick up for them on the flip side of this.

It's not just ACL.

I hope every single MSC employee weathers this; if salaried, they can at least file for unemployment.

I had an email saying goodbye from my ACL scheduler as well! That was quite fast!

Most ACL schedulers and editors are IC.

At least in my state many can get unemployment if they have an income which is reported to the IRS. You do not need to be an "employee". As a Independent Contractor you are still receiving $$ and getting taxes taken out (by you if not by the "employer".)
There was an article this week in the paper encouraging anyone working in the gig economy to apply for unemployment as they think many will qualify. They have loosened the rules quite a bit. So give it a try if you can manage to get into the website which evidently keeps crashing due to the number of applicants. Even for us, if we live in a state where there are no or many fewer jobs (or we can prove the jobs are bogus such as ones wanting you to go to a store which is closed.) But certainly for those who were officially laid off it is a real possibility.

From what I heard, they are no longer ICs, because they went to employees when the company was sold.

Yeah, that's news to me. I was an editor for ACL and made $5 a report. I definitely did not make a living wage and it was okay for a few months during the dead of winter when driving conditions were bad (back when we had bad winters), but that's as long as I could stand it. I never heard anything about them becoming employees since then.

Even if they are employees, in my state you have to be a full-time employee to get unemployment compensation.

So they are without jobs. Maybe we were not meant to know who was employee and who was IC. I hope they all will have opportunities and/or some respite and/or some relief via the federal unemployment. What the Senate passed includes federal unemployment for [at least] some ICs. Will the House keep this when they vote? We will know soon...

Part-time employees are eligible for unemployment in most states. Regardless, it sounds like with the bill passed all those regular rules are out the window for a few months.

That's usually the case, but the exception for unemployment's changed temporarily (4 months?).

At the same time, even some of the gig services like Uber, Instacard, etc. are offering company-provided pay for up to two weeks, is more than generous as well, even though those that work those gigs are IC's.

As mentioned in another thread, David Macaleese used to be the owner and CEO. He retired about a year ago. He sold the company to some holding company, and there have been a lot of changes. They are still a reliable company though in my opinion.

Keep checking with your state. I am in Michigan and it took from Friday until today for the changes to be made by the Governor's office to be included. Hopefully your state's bureaucracy just is taking a bit longer than in other states (my state also had to make some changes such as allowing you to file 2 weeks ago, automatically approving claims that were previously denied, etc.). ICs were included in the bill passed by Congress and signed into law at the end of last week.

Yes indeed. I look everyday. As of today, no changes.

No love lost there.... tired of editors inventing new questions not on report.
