What about that EIN? How long is it "good?"

A long time ago one of the MS companies suggested (required?) that shoppers get an EIN. I got one, but I use my SSN on tax returns. Question: if I have never used it, is it still "good?" The State of Texas requires proof of self-employment to apply for disaster benefits, and a website states a State or Federal Employer Identification Number is one form of proof.

It's like a SSN where you get one for life...so it should be fine to use.

I also read somewhere that people who used the EIN on their taxes (as the main entry for filing, not in a schedule C) may be exempt from receiving a stimulus check, so probably best that you were not using it on your taxes....
Ah but California requires that you have an EIN if you get close to making the required $600 for a 1099 to be cut to you. So once again we get screwed by the government.

I don't think that's true. There may be a company that asks you to have one if they send a 1099, but it's not required by the state.

You are free to claim your Shed C income with your regular SS number. I have multiple businesses, so I simply use the EIN to to hep delineate where the money is coming from. Much of my business is done with my social and far in excess of $600....
