I don't think that's true. There may be a company that asks you to have one if they send a 1099, but it's not required by the state.
You are free to claim your Shed C income with your regular SS number. I have multiple businesses, so I simply use the EIN to to hep delineate where the money is coming from. Much of my business is done with my social and far in excess of $600....
