Coyle: Will they come back post-coronavirus?

I'm so sad. I was terrified of Coyle... I finally accept a show. January or Feb. Realize their schedulers are wonderful. The questions aren't as scary as I realized. The experiences are fantastic! And now, I wonder, will they ever bring back restaurant shops and others? I know no one has answers. Yes, everything in life is uncertain right now. Just thought I'd lament. I hope all you shoppers are healthy and well!

As a big player in the hotel and restaurant industry mostly high end I would guess they will be back full force eventually.

Shopping Western NY, Northeast and Central PA, and parts of Ohio and West Virginia. Have car will travel anywhere if the monies right.
Currently on their site, I see quite a few lodging getaway shops, in various parts of the country. Wish there was one in Colorado!

I have every confidence that they will survive these unprecedented challenges. I look forward to working with them again in the near future.
I'm not so optimistic for a fast recovery from Coyle. The restaurant and hotel industries are some of the hardest hit, and it's going to be some time before those clients are able to focus on the specifics that Coyle evaluates.

I think it will be a different Coyle that we see in the near future. The lodging shops they have right now, while cool, are not anywhere near the same level as previous Coyle clients in terms of luxury. They have an appeal to a very specific client base.

Other than that, of the 28 posted assignments, there's 1 hotel, some virtual senior centers and a gas station. Coming from the 5,000+ evaluations that were present going into the pandemic, I think it's safe to say that's a drastic reduction in clients.

With so much narrative focus on smiles from them in the past, I'm curious to see what the requirements may be for future assignments, with face coverings and social distance being the new norm.
smiling smiley

I was masked in a store and a beaming employee told me they knew I was smiling because they saw it in my eyes. I dunno about that. but she certainly had an expressive set of eyes. They communicated her friendly greeting to me and made me feel welcome and comfortable in the store. I don't think there is an art or a science of eye reading...

Why post facts when speculation is more the norm?

Yes, with more spread out seating it will be close to impossible to report on the neighboring table's interactions that they require.

My last shop for them in February was approved with no feedback requiring me to respond. Sure they found stuff to complain about to avoid giving me a 100 but i considered it a victory, anyway.
I see the number of open opportunities on the left side on their site. What is the easiest way to view all Coyle opportunities? Thank you!
@roxanne9153; Just remove your ZIP code and update the filter. It should then show you everything....
@SteveSoCal Thank you very much! You are always so informative and willing to share your knowledge. It is much appreciated.

Do you think the Explore America Tax Credit has a chance of coming to pass? And, if so, do you think we would be able to get credit when shopping a Coyle hotel/restaurant? (Have my receipts just in case ;-))

I doubt it comes to pass. If people don't feel comfortable traveling, they won't. We usually travel a few times a year. We planned on going to NYC and DC, and later France this year. I usually drive to Vegas a couple of times each year. However, I'm not going anywhere for a while (Although I am looking at the doing some fishing and hiking some trails in Lake Tahoe). Travel prices have already been slashed 50% in many cases, but I don't care. We will wait. Anyway, right now it looks like Europe won't be allowing travel from the U.S., and each state varies in terms of Covid guidelines. NY is indicating they don't want people from my state coming to theirs. I talked about the Explore America Tax Credit with my other half, and it does sound nice, but it is not an incentive for me. I will travel when I'm ready. Hopefully, it does pass. My understanding the tax credit could be applied through 2021. I'm sure this mess will be over by then. However, in your case, I don't think you could apply receipts accrued from travel before the tax credit passes.

I'm personally hoping for the tax credit, and have been been making plans based the possibility.

I was supposed to be in Rome this weekend, so besides stuffing my face with pasta, I'm avoiding the lack-of-travel depression by scheduling local trips; Little Italy in San Diego is the closest I will get to Rome, but I made it to Yosemite just after it re-opened last week, and have some trips to the wine country planed. All financed with the refund from my Italy vacation, and possibly a tax credit to boot.

And for those what want travel shops, this credit would be an amazing substitute. No reports. A very precise reimbursement date, and you get to keep the points on your credit card!

That said, I would never attempt to write off a stay or meal that I was reimbursed for. I don't have to be a tax professional to tell that it's against the rules and could potently land you in legal trouble. The credit if for money you spend on your own. If the hotel was reversed of the meal reimbursed, that will be evident in an audit, and so taking a tax credit for it would be graft...but it is my understanding that the tax credit would apply for the whole year, including domestic travel last January.
Wow! Then the credit would be retroactive back to the first of the year? Nice. How was Yosemite? Do you camp? Stay in a cabin? Lodge?

There's no tent/cabin options, since I think they don't want to deal with public showers right now. Only the standard lodge/hotel options, and the lottery system for tickets to get in from outside locations.

I was able to book a room at the lodge before the outside ticking was operational and thought that was my ticket into the park, but the called the day before and cancelled the reservation. Apparently all rooming units in the county now have to be vacant for 24 hours after they are serviced to help stop the spread. I was lucky enough to grab the one available condo rental in Yosemite West that night, which allowed park access.

Outside of the reservation issue, it was amazing. Just like when I was a kid. No busses. No people from outside CA that I came across. The hiking paths has only a few people on them. I was probably from the furthest away of anyone we spoke with. They set up Curry Village with food tracks and outdoor tables, with hand sanitizing stations and masks required when waiting and ordering, which was the only departure from the norm that reminded me we were in a pandemic.
They have one posted in Ontario, Canada hotel covid check process but American/ Canadian border closed to Americans. So even if I wanted to do for $50 and a hotel stay of one night I could not.

Have the first restaurant shop tonight. It is outdoor seating on the patio and no bar. Expect it to be pretty empty.
Hmmmm... it looks like more shops, but in Florida, extremely low end hotel stays? Not the luxury shops as before. Haven't seen the high-end restaurant shops return either.

Sounds super easy. Scheduler was trying to explain to me that they were hoping that the restaurants would fully open at the end of July. My inside info says much later than that.

I wanted a Maserati SUV for my birthday, but that didn't happen either! hahaha
It was the first Coyle shop I have done that I got a 100% on. I did have to ask the server a bunch of questions. Service was poor and food was cold. Half the meal wound up being comped anyway. Had a $225 limit and only spent $135 including tip. I don't think they changed the reimbursement limit without having to do the bar. I was impressed that all Covid procedures were followed.
They seem to have like two clients in NYC, but the really interesting thing to me is that their emails now as you to BID for your payment. Before they would ALWAYS pay $15 for every single dining shop, now they say something like "Please bid for your payment. Past payments have been in the $5-20 dollar range."

Part of me thinks they're desperate and can't afford to pay $15 plus reimbursement anymore. Part of me feels that they know that they need to offer more payment to get shoppers into restaurants, but for some reason don't want to up their pay to $20. Why do you think this change happened?

Because if you offer $20-30 to get shops done, then somehow manage to build your business back up to where it once was after a few years, how do you go about walking that payment back to $15 without pissing shoppers off?

If you look at the dollar value over time, fixing the payment at $15 since I started working for them back around 2000 has actually effectively been slowly reducing payment. They should have upped it to $20 around 2015 to keep it equitable.

There are obviously going to be a lot of changes in the hospitality industry, and therefore the MS industry, in the coming years. For me, I'm happy to sit back, take the observer approach, and see where it goes....

If they are offering a $200 reimbursement, I might do a shop. The $15 doesn't make a difference one way or another. Now, you are not getting me into a restaurant, so I don't care how much they are paying or how much they will cover in food.
