Newbie Question

Hi everyone!

I am working my way into mystery shopping with micro-mini baby steps. I've completed 1 shop, am tackling 2 this week, and am signing up to companies a little at a time, so I can learn how to keep things organized, don't stress out, and hopefully don't foul up the jobs.

I started the sign up process with Maritz, and they are asking for a completed W-9 form. I poked around the site and couldn't find an explanation about what this form is, exactly, and what it gets used for. Can someone explain it in laymen's terms?

Thanks!

Welcome! It's a form for the IRS.

Thanks to all the forum members!
W-9 is the IRS form for a Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification. Basically to make sure you are who you say you are and confirm your Social Security Number or Employer ID Number. I have filled out a few of these for a few companies, though most don't ask for it. I use my EIN instead of SSN and have had no issues. @MDavisnowell - The I-9 is the citizen/immigration form. That is usually only needed if you are going to be an employee. I have filled out the I-9 for merchandising companies where I am an actual employee, not an independent contractor.

Could I have a receipt please?
Where was the I-9 mentioned?

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

I-9 was not originally mentioned, but someone gave it's purpose for the W-9, instead. Then someone else clarified.

Thanks, everybody!

@InPlainSight, I sent an email, asking for clarification, and partly because, as an independent sub, I'm not understanding why it would be needed.
What would my EIN be, as an independent sub?
EIN is an employer identification number. Independent contractors have the choice of using that or their SSN as their tax ID.

Here is the explanation from the IRS.

Thanks! It all makes sense, now. I hadn't noticed the IRS link when I had popped back in. I'm a bit tech challenged, and need to give myself extra time to absorb info via websites.
