mystery shopper guidance

Hi, my username is Mrs. Honest

I just joined the mystery shoppers community just now because I recieved some information in the mail just a week ago from a mystery shopper company with a check that I am suppose to cash but I am not sure if its a scam or not so I need some tips on how to check and see if the company is real or not and what are some of the best mystery shopper companies (if it can be provided) to work for. Basically, I need some guidance on which companies to trust and what should I expect as a mystery shopper.

If you received a check in the mail from a company with whom you did not sign up first and provide your social security number, then it is a scam. Any company that pays you for working would need to collect information so they could report to IRS. In addition, legitimate companies do NOT generally pay in advance. With a legitimate company, you will sign up on a website, providing your personal information and SS#. Some have tests or require writing samples. After being accepted as a shopper, you can apply for assignments in your area. If you are assigned a mystery shop, you perform it and submit a report. AFTER you have reported, IF your report is correct and accepted, you get paid. There's a great list of legitimate companies at the link at the bottom of the page.
Mrs. Honest, everything AustinMom said is both true and good advice.

I just want to add that some of the scammers are using the names of legitimate mystery shopping companies. Legitimate mystery shopping companies never, ever send unregistered mystery shoppers unsolicited checks in the mail. If you deposit this check to your account, in the hopes that it is real, I assure you, Mrs. Honest, you will be in a pile of hurt. Please don't do it!

(heart)

I intend to live forever. So far, so good.
Mrs Honest it is a common scam. So sorry as I know the money is enticing but if you deposit that check you will be in for a world of hurt.
Moving on to what companies to trust, there are quite a few legitimate companies. Check out the Official List that is linked at the bottom of every forum page. There is a valid link to each there.

Once you put the scam behind you there is lots of wonderful information about mystery shopping on the forum. The New Member's section is a great place to start.

Have fun!
