I get emails but not all shops I'm signed up for sends me emails so I check the boards of my favorites and then get emails for the rest.
I definitely check emails and calls multiple times in a day. Checking job boards is a nearly daily task. However, I don't do that for every company I am signed up for. That would be significantly time consuming and not worth it. I have groupings of companies for that. The first group of bookmarks is about 15 companies. These have lots of jobs in my area that I want to do. I use the Firefox feature "Open All In Tabs" and viola! I have those 15 opened up to the log on page. I have other groupings that are of less importance to me. Those I open up less often. Sometimes I check a job board for a particular shop or perhaps to see what a particular company has that allows self-assignment.

As you gain experience your personal preferences will shape how often you search job boards and which ones, too.

Happily shopping Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut
Awesome. Thanks you guys.. I have a tab set up for daily, M-F and the 1st and 15th.. I have my better companies daily.. some slower 1's to check weekly(a few on each day along with daily). and some that never have anything in my area for monthly. Works for me.. I check emails immediately.
I depend mostly on emails unless I am doing a route and I need to fill a gap, then I check my favourite website.
The more MSCs you have established a track record with, the more email offers you are likely to get. At some point you will hit "critical mass," where nearly all of your shop times get filled from emails and you just double check a few favorite shop boards regularly.

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
Thank you for posting this question. I had been wondering the same thing recently. I'm working on the "critical mass" that Walesmaven mentions. I also find myself getting sucked down the rabbit hole of job boards when searching through the 25-ish companies I'm currently registered with. So This thread was incredibly helpful to me - especially the one about setting up groupings in Firefox.
