Is what legal?

Hi Lisa..

Mystery shopping itself.. I read something about two party and one party consensus for recording.. florida requires 2p consensus..

I am bit confused.
The law refers to audio recording. Audio and video with audio recording are unique types of mystery shops. I'm not aware of a law anywhere in the country that make general mystery shopping illegal. As a new shopper, your focus is going to be on non-recorded shops because it is important to get experience in the business first.

Recorded shops can actually be performed in two party consent states. Two party consent means both participants must give permission to be recorded. Some employers get written consent from their employees to be recorded during the course of their job. We should still exercise our due diligence and ask if a target has in fact signed off before performing video or audio shops.

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

This has to do with making audio recordings of shops. Shopping itself is legal. Audio recording of shops in Florida is not without the consent of both parties. I use a DVR in Florida regularly on shops to make MY notes. Things such as time in/time out of the location, names, descriptions, timings, anything I don't care to bother trying to remember. My DVR is in my pocket with a remote microphone in my blouse. I can push 'Record' once to start making my observation notes and push again to put it on pause while I interact with the associates, then push again to record when I can safely make comments.
Thanks Lisa and Flash...

That solved my concern.

Thanks a lot. The forum is really useful in terms of real companies vs scams..

Regarding my other question, MSC for Florida cities? Would appreciate anyhelp.

I signed up with one that has none in FL :$

Eager to start this.. smiling smiley
MSCs don't really specialize in one state or another. Most of us have signed on with between 150 to 200 companies but regularly work with as few as 20 to 40.

Register for the free version at Jobslinger.com. Put in your zip code and a radius around you. Look at what shops are offered. The shops you see have likely been taken (Jobslinger is slow to take them down), but it will let you know what companies have shops in your area so you should register with them.
Tada.. okay... so lets say whatever companies I see there i can register..

Also, inputting ur personal info like ssn or tin or ein is okay as in safe?

Theres no way out without entering though...:/
If you have questions as to the validity of any company you can come back here and use the links from the "Official List of Mystery Shopping Companies" at the bottom of each page of the forum. You have to register with any company you want to work with. You will find that their websites are secure (look for https: in the URL) and most companies need your personal information and demographics before you can accept work. One company does not require a SSN until you are close to earning $600 for the year. All the rest require either an SSN or an EIN. Not all will accept a SSN and not all will accept an EIN.
Thanks for all the info.. its really helpful.
I really appreciate all the help I got, I feel more hopeful towards the professio now. smiling smiley
Hi newbie, a few companies that have shops nationwide and have fairly easy reports (great for beginners) are Marketforce, Trendsource, Maritz, IPSOS, and National Shopping Service. Keep in mind that you have to spend money on some shops that require a purchase that you won't get back right away. Different companies have different pay schedules, so be sure to pay attention to that.
Customer Service Experts is consistently in "desperate" need of shoppers near Orlando. Ditto for Reality Based Group. Buckalew Hospitality has some Florida hotel shops open as does Coyle. If you're flying (or can get badged for MCO), Shared Insight has a trifecta shop (fast, easy, and well-paying) open.

Sometimes the best way to get started is to sign up with scheduling companies who fill shops for many different MSCs. Summit Scheduling or Kern can hook you up with many companies at once.

Now scheduling travel shops for the day after Christmas through mid-January.

Well general mystery shopping isn't completely illegal it does have some weird laws in nevada where you must get a private investigator license or work for one in order to legal shop there. Everywhere else in the usa it is legal with no special requirements.

Shopping Western NY, Northeast and Central PA, and parts of Ohio and West Virginia. Have car will travel anywhere if the monies right.
Good point. I tend to forget about Nevada. At least I was right about 49 out of 50 states, LOL.
