I need one last job this month

Ok so maybe I really shouldn't gripe however I was checking my logs and the amount was all 9's. I basically need a penny to give me a $1k this month. I double checked everything and chuckled at the amount. I have never been so close and now I can't find another assignment since my truck has me stuck at the repair shop!
I am wondering if I could just walk to another job...

Ellie in Ohio - trying to get those ends to meet...
I felt that way once when my total was at $666. Can't remember the cents, because I think there was some odd cents in there thanks to CORI, but I just didn't want my total to be $666. So I was determined to take pretty much *any* other job to change that. As I recall, I picked up a nicely bonused job in another town that I was able to put some other shops with for a reasonably profitable day and went *way* over $700... So it turned out well. smiling smiley

I also put back the Christmas ham that weighed 6.66 lbs. Heh. And, when doing mashed potatoes for the holidays, I usually buy the huge baker potatoes just because I don't have to stand at the sink for as long peeling them. At Thanksgiving, I filled up three of those produce bags with those big potaotes and one of the bags happened to weigh 6.66 lbs! If I hadn't had other bags there to make the total weight something else, I would have had them run to get me another potato ~ or left one behind!

Just one of my eccentricities. smiling smiley

I actually found another 10 however because I took a major route that required my gas on the 1st of the month, I could only take 4 of them which left me at $1101! Again not complaining however I would love to just have a more round and even number. Oh well maybe next month. My truck is fixed and that was what this effort was all for. I am now trying to make an extra $500 for May when I purchase my video equipment. SO I am off pushing for $1500 - $2000 next month. I am in an area that has a lot of jobs and not many workers so I am hopeful.

Where did you find a video camera at $500? The newer ones are somewhere around $690 for the complete rig with an additional $70 for the extended battery. The extended battery is optional, but recommended.

LisaSTL, I uhmm well let me be just up front with everyone. These are my bills:
phone - $25,
dog food - $50
laundry - $50
food - $200
redbox/netflix/ movies $20
which equals less then $400 a month. The rest goes in the tank - truck belly or my belly. I try to make no less then $600 a month though I prefer $1k. This is so I can have "float" money, repair money and monopoly money (purchase/ return and straight purchase shops). This winter I had hotel bills, repair bills, and I got sick so the money got stretched thin. This is the other reason why I am now trying desperately to catch up and replenish the float, monopoly and repair funds. Hence why I needed one more shop. I have been skating on thin ice this entire winter.

As far as finding equipment, I will be going through NYC. I wont say more since saying that is usually enough. Just saying.

All I was asking about was the $500 for a camera. Often rigs are less expensive through sources other than Measure because they do not include all of the same components. When considering what appeared to be a bargain to me, purchasing the other components drove up the total cost and it was no longer a bargain. I always suggest shoppers look at Measure's store to compare apples to apples and be an educated consumer before purchasing expensive equipment.

The thought that went through my mind was a pretty bad one. I don't want to spell it out, but I'm sure I'm not getting what you meant to imply. If that's not what you meant to imply, you might want to spell it out. (Deliberately making my post just as vague.)
@Ishmael - you can find everything in NYC. Everything in NYC, if going to the right sources, can be a lot cheaper.

@Lisa - are you talking about Measure CP? I didn't know that they had a store.

For several years Measure CP has been working with a supplier to provide a group purchase rate for video equipment. Getting to the page can be a bit convoluted and is through their general website measurecp.com rather than the Shopmetrics site we use for assignments. Here is a link which should take you directly to the store for comparison shopping.

A few years ago (quite a few) I parked my BMW a couple of doors away from the dealer I was visiting in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn. I noticed a guy looking into the back of my car and then walked into the store I was in, apparently not knowing I was there. He said to his buddy, who had come into the store after me, "yeah, they are Blaupunkt" - referring to my rear speakers. They both left the store and were looking in the back of my car again. I told the store owner what I suspected was happening and he opened his door and shouted at them in his Italian accent that that car belonged to his friend and that "it is his car therefore my car". They ran like hell. He told me that car break-ins are common in the area and I ever needed speakers or a radio or tires to let him know - he'll put in a special order at a great price.

He probably deals in video equipment as well. Gypsy, are you dealing with Vito?
LIJake Which part of the Island you from? Me? Farmingdale. As far as Vito goes. Let's just say I know a lot of Vito's, Sal's, Micheal's, Peder's, Paddy's and "oh crap that fell off d'truck" kinda folks. Nothing is stole. Everything is legit. It comes from working in NYC for 10 years when I had my own consulting business.

Ishmael where did that come from? I stated that everything I do and come in contact with is legit. I have friends and old business contacts I can reach out to. Therefor I apologize if you received the wrong notion about me.

I apologize. Having never been in New York City, I don't know how things work. Hearing about someone scouting a car for a break-in, someone 'putting in a special order', and 'something that just fell off a truck', in rapid succession gave me the wrong impression.

What does it mean when something 'just falls off a truck?' I always just assumed that it was code for something that had been stolen.
Me, too... but she just said she *knows* some people like that, not that she deals with them. Don't we all know some odd-balls? smiling smiley

have you ever been to an outlet store? The outdated merchandise is sold there. Sometimes a seamstress will make a mistake and the garment is still sold just under a different label - it's how I got an Armani suit. The label was sewn upside down. I got the $500 dollar suit for $100. When someone says oops, it doesn't necessarily mean stolen. Where you buy it from does. I have made many contacts when I was working in NYC. All of which is legit.

Outlet stores for the most part now sell clothes specifically
made for the outlet stores now and not clothing with mistakes
or that didn't sell or last years designs.

This totally depends on the "outlet store." Nordstrom Rack has last season merch, overstock, odd sizes that didn't sell, and first-run merchandise to beef out the selection. Saks Off Fifth and Neiman's Last Call are more last season's items and overstocks. Mistakes like the Armani suit with the label upside, you just don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
PS I used to live in NYC and it can totally be done. I survived between jobs on 1100 with $700 of that going for rent/utilities. I had no car, so I just bought a monthly subway card. When I ate out, I would grab a $3 slice of pizza, and ate cheaply from the supermarket. No vacations, but I could get everywhere i wanted to go on the subway and all my friends were in NYC. There were cultural events for free in the summer. There were movies for free in the park. Medical care was provided for at the low income clinic. It was the most fun I ever had in my life.
