I almost made the salesman cry

I found a $30 car shop for the new Leaf. I was in the area for another shop so I figured why not. Well the guy is barely speaking about the car and then turns the conversation to a complete negative. He downs the mileage, the charging capabilities and other features. Well we finally sit at the desk and he asks about payments. He then pushes the financing paper over to me and leaves to fetch a model for me to drive. When he comes back, he see that I did not fill out the paperwork. I tell him that I want to check my credit union for terms first. This is when the guy gets teary eyed. He fumbles the conversation and becomes desperate in trying to overcome my objection. I can tell this is no act. I then take a closer look at his desk. It is empty. He didn't have any paper work in his own drawers. He was either on his way in or on a 2-10. He leaves again to get a business card. When he comes back, he passes me off to another associate. He states that another customer from yesterday has come back to purchase.
My stomach is in knots. I really hope he gets that other sale. A 2-10 is even less fun then being new!

(2-10: Two sales in ten customers or there is the door)

Just lost trying to find a fire pit in a concrete jungle wishing it was a wooded glen...

if it wasn't for bad luck, I would have no luck at all

If he's that poor a salesman, getting fired would be a good thing. He needs another career. I've had a salesman who did absolutely nothing to sell or demo the car I was looking at. The only thing he mentioned spontaneously was the roomy trunk. The car was loaded with new technology I kept touching inquisitively and he never picked up the cue to explain what I was looking at.

A few months later his replacement called me, following up on his leads since he didn't work there any more.

I'd be a lousy salesperson too. I don't like being pressured and I couldn't pressure anyone else into a sale.

Think good thoughts about him, that he found a job he was more suited for.

Time to build a bigger bridge.
I totally agree with you, dspeakes! Although getting fired is scary and, momentarily, demoralizing, it often is a blessing in disguise! It causes you to rethink the path you're on.

I intend to live forever. So far, so good.
I wouldn't feel too badly about it. Unfortunately, high pressure sales don't actually work very well. When people are ready to buy, they let you know. They only thing to do is ask if they are ready to take it home that night and if they aren't, get their contact info. But really, it's not even worthwhile to call. Quite of few of their non-paying customers are mystery shoppers. I used to work gym membership sales and you just can't pressure people into it until they are ready to plunk down their wallets. They used to make us go to the park or set up a table on the street. What BS. You just have to present the product and then ask if they want it.
He reminds of of Ol' Gil from The Simpsons.

Seriously, nobody cares that you're offended.
Car salespersons are an interesting lot (no pun). If thin skinned, this is certainly not the field for them. A few honest reports will allow them to move on to a happier profession with a few tears along the way.

Due to personal beliefs/convictions/political beliefs/human rights beliefs I hold - all of which I will not elaborate on here as this would not be appropriate - I would feel very guilty in this situation and would not shake it off easily. What I will say is that I find today's economy unacceptably cruel in many ways and for a grown man to cry - I just couldn't easily forget that and move on. But this is me, I get that not all are going to perceive it that way and I'm not saying that all should, either.

I absolutely don't ever want to hurt anyone in any way, but if they can't handle some level of rejection they really are not cut out to be in sales. I hope for retraining, but also say no in the kindest way I can. Having worked retail for many years, I know there are very many nasty people out there i. The world. Having an ill prepared sales pitch sure is not going to make the nasty ones more pleasant.

Edited because for some reason technology decided to split a word apart in a very odd manner.
