"No! I don't want it for Free! Please!"

That was my first time someone tried to give me so many free things. I think I "froze" a little...

My biggest concern was following the guidelines, so I would get paid. I see what everyone is saying and that it is normal to accept a "free" item due to a delay..

I do a regional chain of casual restaurants. I was required to order a drink, appetizer, entree and then dessert. When one server brought three small plates of appetizers as the entree, explaining that "It was cheaper than the entree ordered and almost the same food.", I had listed enough of his obvious incompetence that the MS believed me when my bill listed 4 appetizers and my explaination.
I've had comped food and drinks given to me during shops many times, whether it was for the long wait, mistake, etc. Simply stick with the client guidelines as much as possible, maintain your shopper identity and report exactly what happened. From my experiences, all shops I had an unusual circumstance happened were approved.

I found myself in a similar situation and did not get paid. The MSC did have instructions not to accept one particular type of special, but I accepted when I was offered a different special. I thought it would seem odd not to accept the special. I reported this exactly as it happened, and the MSC refused to pay me.

I was on a fine dining shop. Piece of hair in my food. Long story short, our entire bill was comp'd. OMG, what to do? I said that was OK, things happen. PANIC. I needed that receipt. I chalked it up and reported it to the MSC. I got paid for the tips I left. Now, I just let things flow. On a recent fine dining shop, my side item was cold. A hot side item was delivered in its place. It was comp'd on my receipt. I reported it as it happened and no questions were asked.
I've had food items comped a time or two and received some guest certificates in return for a memorably poor meal another time. I always accept what's offered and explain on my report. It's never been a problem. And I agree that refusing a comp makes us REALLY memorable!

Similar but not exactly as it is OK to be comped. A hotel shop. The manager offered to comp my room. "No, not an issue. I am fine with it." She was insistent. I said, "If you want to give me a few points I could live with that. I'm saving my points for London." She comped the room anyway and when it came time for her to see the negative issues I had reported she claimed she knew I was a shopper which got me banned. The ms company said the manager knew I was the shopper because of the point request. Maybe the major issues I found with the hotel were really the reason she "knew" I was the shopper, but in any case when a shopper's target makes the offer to give the shopper anything and protests to the contrary are made it probably makes the light go on in the shoppee's mind.
Bearclaw, in the spirit of "blending in", I would have taken advantage of the free tire rotation, with an explanation in the report and in an email to the scheduler. smiling smiley

I intend to live forever. So far, so good.
I had an experience at a 5 Guys last year. I went to do the shop and the manager was at the door blocking customers. She told customers that there toaster was broken and waiting to get it fixed and if I didn't mind that the roll would not be toasted I could go ahead and order. She gave me coupon for a free burger the next time I came in. The shop was accepted as I explained what happened but I forgot to use the coupon as it had an expiration date.
I take the comp and I am bummed because I get it for free anyway. They should pay the cost of the meal anyway becuse the experience had no value. no enjoyment.

I do not get paid for the shop because the meal is the reimbursement. So I got a crappy meal or service because it was amateur hour.

My report tells the story and the fact it was comped confirms the story. The schedulers do not ding you for that but if you did not pay they do not pay you (unless there is a fee, you get that but not the reimbursement.

You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want ..Zig Zigler
