Losing it at a McDonald's in Abilene Right Now

I did a shop one time where all the TVs in the restaurant were turned to some hunting show. For the next hour, my eyes were either fixated on the waitresses (HELLO!!!!) or some dude field dressing a deer, butchering a rabbit, or gutting fish.

TV has just become so ubiquitous that I think many people just tune it out. There are TV screens everywhere in places that once did not have them: hotel lobbies, waiting rooms at auto repair places, restaurants (Used to be you might find one TV in the bar. Now there are twenty.). Thank goodness health professionals have not started putting TVs in their waiting rooms, and I hope they never do.

Also, around here, I have noticed a rather sad trend. Some McDonald's have removed their indoor playgrounds and, instead, put in TVs. Just what kids need! Fattening McDonald's meals and no playground to exercise in.

How about just no TV period??? Let's face it - it was nicknamed the "idiot box" for a reason. And there's never going to be something that's considered appropriate to everyone and, personally, I'm absolutely sick of the constant bombardment of senseless noise, flashing images and - for lack of a better word - crap. If I'm in line at a store and there's a TV at the checkout, I search for the "off" button and use it. I choose to not have the TV constantly on in my home - why am I forced into that environment in a place I'm spending my hard-earned money (reimbursed or not is irrelevant).

How about if we talk to each other instead while eating? How about bringing a book if your alone? I've always brought a book to read aloud to my daughters when we went out to eat. Or this all just too damn "old fashioned"?

Sorry, but this touched a nerve (obviously!). Makes me wish my local Mickey D's had a TV so I could bring it up in my report (although I agree that the usual suspect shopping them doesn't seem to have a spot to mention it).

Thanks for letting me vent...ah, feeling better!
I've noticed MSNBC playing in a McDonalds. I thought it was noteable, because there were several customer
Groups eating their lunches intentively watching TV. Was it a customer request or a political stance of the restaurant's
Management? Oh well, the television was a very good one, and it wasn't too loud. The kids present were all loudly
Relating in the kiddie playground.

Sorry you had a bad experience. If it was too loud, you would need to report it. Please excuse this bad writing, I don't
Type so well with a smartphone.

I agree they should choose more appropriate programming!

While I have you-can I shamelessly offer you a mystery shop in Abilene-LOL! (I'm actually serious).

*Sigh* I've seen them in waiting rooms too.

I agree with blessedmama--too many TVs *everywhere*, not just at McDs.

Same here. I only shop there if well bonused. But, if I were there with my kids (not shopping), I would have told the manager that we were leaving because of the inappropriate content on the tv.
Not on a shop, the TV in a small restaurant was showing a "reality" show with the volume up high. Just as my food arrived, the host announced the next challenge, eating a buffalo's testicle. I asked the waitress to turn that off and we were treated to a loud argument as the busboys really wanted to watch that. The manager eventually turned it off, just as the gross segment ended. That restaurant went out of business quite soon afterwards.

Muzak was invented for a reason.
News is ugly but vey real- to a point. And that point is where the facts are not reported as facts and are sensationalized in some way by media. After all reporters are there to keep you riveted to their station and many eyes watching and listening to their "purported" facts, which is really only their self interested take on the facts of any story, is what they are hoping for. Is it great viewing for children? Probably not as a steady diet, although kids really need to know that mom and dad will not always be there to protect them and may not even be able to if they are there. Is it good viewing at Mc D's? Again, probably not. After all is said and done, sensitive people of any age are going to be upset, which is not a good take away when one is dining at their establishment. So, report the facts and if management decides that beheadings are not good for business they may take action. Otherwise, buy a lot of Mc. D's stock and vote with your wallet.
<They actually made a state law for *that*?! A *law*. Sheesh.>

Yeah, Michigan is pretty conservative. It is not enforced, but there is a state law about not cursing in front of children.

Right after this thread started, my favorite breakfast McDonald's switched from CNN to the Weather Channel endless loop. Thanks.

I would like to take a quickie survey - if you are brave enough to be honest:

The last dinner you ate with your child (any age) - where was it?
ie: specifically.... where.... at home, where at a restaurant, etc. For me, it was the family in front of the TV.

You?
We had dinner here at home, around the kitchen table. We generally eat in the dining room, but sometimes we gather in the kitchen as the meal is prepared. My husband cooked tonight, as I was on my home from a gas station shop route. Neither the kitchen nor the dining room have TVs.
The last time I ate with my late daughter was at her dining room table. My husband and I eat pretty much all our meals in front of the TV. Often in front of separate TVs.

Here in Cali, ALL the waiting rooms have programming on from a company called Accent Health. They have something to do with CNN, as a few of my friends who used to work at CNN Atlanta now work there. Their doctor on camera is Sanjay Gupta, who I believe still works for CNN.

They do various reports on health-related subjects, as you might expect. The reports and recipes are good, and I'm glad some of my friends have found employment there, but it's just obnoxious being advertised to when you are such a captive audience in the waiting room, and often for a very long time.

I find myself thinking a lot about this thread. The last time I ate with one of my kids was last night at a diner. I did not notice any televisions but they may have been there - I don't know because I was talking to my daughter while we ate. McDonalds started out as a place for families and children but it has evolved over the years. I see a lot of single adults eating at McDonalds now - cheap and fast if you are on a tight budget- who probably enjoy watching CNN or Fox while having a meal. Why can't they have an area for adults and an area for families and children who do not want to be bothered by a television. There is no way I would have had my toddlers eating while something horrific played on the tube. Have an area where there is no news and family entertainment if there has to be a television.
but then you are doing the same as them, you put on your headphones to ignore the TV, just like them, except they don't have headphones. If you seen someone with headphones on, would you have gotten mad?

Maybe they didn't want to hear the TV because they would be sad or angry. You can not judge others for what they do, or chose to ignore, unless you judge yourself.

Sorry, not trying to cause drama, it's just sometimes we need to see the other side.
