Hearing Christmas Music in Barnes & Noble Right now -- November 5!

I am so with you on this one. As soon as halloween is over the Christmas trees start showing up in the stores and then the piped music. December 1st would be a good time to start with the music and the over the top decorations. In early November it just irritates me and makes it so clear how commercial and money driven this holiday season has become. I have always bought gifts at the last minute so the sales do not impress me. The next time (probably today) I am in a store with the piped music so early I am going to complain. I like to put in a Yelp review, you would be surprised at how many people agree with you. I doubt if it will change but I always feel better after putting in my 2 cents.

When I walk into a store on a non-shop and they are playing Christmas music or have trees up on the same isle as the Thanksgiving stuff before black friday, I just turn around and leave.

I'd rather just buy most things from Amazon. If it were not for shopping, I'd never step foot in a mall, department store, and never go near a big box store. I buy shoes, underwear and clothing online even. I have bookmarks directly to the clearance pages of my favorite shops and just buy everything out of season.

I live down south, so we have Bass Pro Shop. If I by anything online from them, I have tax added on the bill. If I shop "The Bargain Cave" from [www.cabelas.com] then it comes tax free. I do this with several out of area regional stores. I just shop the ones for the wrong region. It also makes the seasonal stuff better stocked. If it's snowing where the chain is located and I'm in the south, I can score better discounts on shorts and sandals.
I just did a Yelp review of my local mall complaining about the Christmas music playing already.

I am not a big shopper, I would rather get it online. However, I do love the Christmas atmosphere and looking at the Christmas items when I have to be in a store. But I agree it starts earlier every year. I think they should wait until the weekend after Thanksgiving.
Canadian Tire had Xmas crap out before Halloween... If anyone from Toronto was near Dundas Sq before Halloween, you'll know what I mean. They had a huge wreath around their store signage!! Insane!

I don't give my opinion of a business unless the client specifically asks for my personal view. In my location they started playing christmas music the day after halloween EVERYWHERE. It doesn't bother me.

I agree, Cettie. If I'm asked, I'm happy to give my personal opinion, but that's not why we're mystery shopping. I don't like the fixation on Christmas and squeezing the last dollar out of the consumer though.
I shopped my local mall yesterday and the Christmas music was playing . It was interesting though, several of the individual stores were blaring non-Christmas music. Me thinks they might have been sending a message! The big tree was already up and waiting for Santa, who will probably be in house very soon. It is WAY too soon for that.
Christmas is becoming so commercialized!

I drove by a church and there marquee read, "Lets get Christ back in to Christmas."

Now, even religion is trying to get in on it.

Costco has had Xmas merchandise out since Labor Day, if I'm not mistaken. They did that last year, too.

Growing up in NJ, it used to be that Santa showed up at the end of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, which was then the official start of the holiday season. In FL, people started decorating their houses before Thanksgiving, maybe a week before or so.

Here in CA, where I've been for almost 2 years now, I was stunned last year to see that people were decorating their houses right after Halloween! I just passed a shopping center the other day, putting out the lighted reindeer on the front lawn. Unbelievable. Home Depot had their Xmas trees out right next to the pumpkins.

I get it, Xmas is the time retailers try to rack up the business. But enough is enough!

I fully support retailers like Nordstrom. For the past few years, they would wait until the day after Thanksgiving to start putting up Xmas decor. Their motto was something like, "One holiday at a time." Bravo!
Tonight I was at Kohls and Bath & Body Works. Both had Christmas music blaring. It was annoying, to say the least. Can't we at least get through Thanksgiving?
My last stint in retail was back in the mid-90s for Linens 'n Things. It seems the music started a bit early, maybe the first of November. The saving grace, it wasn't constant that early beginning with a few songs sprinkled in with the regular music and then pick up steam closer to Thanksgiving.

Never try to teach a pig to sing. It's a waste of your time and it really annoys the pig.
My dad was a pharmacist and for years had his own corner drug store (he inherited the family business from my grandfather). I distinctly remember helping put the greeting cards up after Halloween, cleaning the dislay cases in mid-November, and finally climbing into the windows and setting up the displays after Thanksgiving....those were the days (early 80s)...also the radio stations at that time would only mix in Christmas music with the non-holiday music up and until Christmas Eve....now if you're lucky you might start hearing it mid-November (although I heard some stations from friends already flipped the switch to Christmas all the time).

You guys talk of Christmas being full force in Oct...places like Big Lots have their stuff out in mid-Sept and of course there is also the Christmas creep....start seeing it in early fall and by the beginning of Oct its full bloom Christmas along with Halloween.

The following had xmas trees up, one month ago: "Kohl's Department Store" ........along with Christmas music...tongue sticking out smiley
Santa Claus was set up in the mall in Wauwatosa this weekend. The best was hearing the WTF comments from the people we passed!
Did a shop in the mall last week and Santa was getting his chair in position with all the decorations complete with Christmas music over the speakers.

Snapped a pic, sent it to my Daughter and told her to tell the grandbaby that I had a meeting with Santa, LOL.

I am done Christmas shopping and am so ready for the Holidays to be here (and over with) now I am just looking forward to bonused shops through the end of the year.

Most bonuses around this time happily have me humming right along with the tunes....

I am one that likes the Christmas music but again, I still have small kids around to threaten. smiling smiley

Just to add. I used to manage a department in a department store. They start putting bathing suits and the like out after New Years.

They call it cruize wear. I hated that, it's so far away from the REAL warm weather it makes me sad....

I'm of the one holiday at a time camp...generally won't listen to Christmas music until around Thanksgiving but then will listen to it until mid-January....love going into the stores post-Christmas and picking up any newer CDs I may have missed and other items on sale....

I had to walk through Macy's to get to a shop on Election Day. They were playing Christmas music and the whole store was decorated for Christmas. They used to wait until the day after Thanksgiving. I was disappointed to see they finally succumbed.

WalMart and Costco have had their Christmas decorations out for a month or more. I don't mind the decorations for sale being out early because we all have to plan, budget, etc. I don't want the store itself decorated nor do I want all the push to buy for Christmas or Christmas music, etc., before Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Hallmark always has their ornaments out after the 4th of July....and I remember Borders when they would put their calendars out about that time too!!!!!!!!

They are businesses trying to make a buck. It's no skin off my nose. Unless they stop stocking the items you were looking for in favor of Christmas merch, I don't see the problem.
