Required Speedpass

Starting in January 2015, a certain client with a particular MSC is requiring shoppers to apply for and I think use Speedpass to make their gas purchases at the pump. Has anyone used this feature yet? Do you have to have it linked to a credit card with automatic replenishing like many of the toll road devices? Do you still earn gas reward points on your credit card if you use the Speedpass? Any info would be helpful.

Sybil, I've been using the Speedpass for a couple of months and it is linked to a credit card. I don't know for sure that I'm getting rewards on the purchases but I can't think why not. My thinking is that if the charge goes through the card I should be getting the points.

I used to have one of those. There was a keytag and a device that was mounted to my rear window. I used it all the time in California; it was linked to the credit card issued by the gas station that used the device.

But there aren't any of that gas station where I live now so I don't know if it still works the way it used to, but it was exactly like using your credit card except you didn't have to swipe the card.

I really liked it when I was using it. No fumbling in my purse for the credit card. And since it was linked to the gas card, nobody could use it to charge anything but gas so there was little risk if the device got lost or stolen.

Time to build a bigger bridge.
but if you are doing a route of say 15 shops, you cant use
the same credit card at the pump 15 times in one day?

I applied and received one a couple of months ago. It is connected to a credit card and I keep it on my key ring so, hopefully, it doesn't get lost or stolen. Anyone who has it can use it and the charges go to my credit card. I don't believe it will be required to be used to purchase gas but rather to check that the Speed Pass at the pumps is working. It will activate the pump but clicks off after several seconds if not used. To be safe, I hit the cancel button at the pump and wait for the light to go out. Techman is right - I can only use the same credit card twice in one day before it is rejected and I am instructed to go inside. I have solved that problem by purchasing gift cards which can be used as many times as needed until it runs out. But don't lose that either - it's like cash.
I have no problem with using my credit card 5-7 times at gas stations in one day. I just stop by the bank the day before and let them know and they let their office know so the stop for my card is overridden.

I have used my same credit card 5 times in one day to purchase gas without issue, and as far as I am aware this client limits these shops to 5 per day.
My credit card has been stopped by the client while I tried to use it at the pumps. I thought it was my bank freezing me out but I have called them a couple of times and they said that they did not put a hold on it. The MSC said that the individual gas station and/or the client prevents the credit card from being used at the pump after being used twice in the same day within a short time frame and for small amounts. I think it depends on the area. Many of the cities I work in have incidents of high fraud and gas station skimming scams.
I call my credit card company the morning of a route of about four or more gas station audits and let them know there will be frequent use on my credit card. I also need to let them know if I'm going out of state, which I often am, because those purchases get flagged quicker. If I don't call them, I can use my credit card 4 or 5 times before it will tell me to see the attendant. My debit card will only allow two gas purchases a day before my card gets shut down.
I applied and did receive the SpeedPass keychain wand a few months ago. It is quite simple to use. Place it on the SpeedPass area of the pump and await the red light to come on.

The MSC for the station requests the shopper to "check" a few pumps in order to ascertain if the SpeedPass indeed, works.

You are not required to use it as a means of payment. That is your decision.

Over the past months, I've been checking the pumps for working receptions. It varies. Some stations have working Speedpass pumps, whilst others, do not. I simply report the findings.

A word to the wise, however: when using the SpeedPass apparatus. do cancel the action. Press the clear or cancel buttons several times until the Speedpass light fades out completely.

Do not walk away from a lit SpeedPass pump until then!

You should know why!
Tatjana is right. You only need to check that it works, not make your purchase with it. I just hold it up to the sensor, let it light up, then hit cancel. Make sure you hear the beeps or watch it clear out. I mean, if you drove up to a pump that was already activated, wouldn't you take the gas? Well, maybe not.
I have been doing the speedpass shops for several months now. You don't have to use the speedpass to make the gas purchase, you just have to use it to see if the pump get activated when you wave it over the tiger. You can cancel the transaction and your card will not be charged.
I wonder if the Speedpass can hook to my Paypal debit card. (We choose to be credit card free.)
I not sure about paypal debit card but it should work for most bank debit cards but I would assume it would run it as credit.

Shopping Western NY, Northeast and Central PA, and parts of Ohio and West Virginia. Have car will travel anywhere if the monies right.
I have mine linked to my Paypal debit. No issues so far. I wave to activate, then press cancel a couple times to make sure it clears out.

Cool. We have a regular debit card, but the Paypal debit (Mastercard system) seems safer than giving access to our chequing account.
