Did a mystery shopper forget their receipt?
Could be someone topping off their tank while prices are low?
I doubt it. Not worth the stop time at the gas station for 2 gallons unless you were stopping for a bathroom break. My bet is a MS'er who forgot to pull the receipt. I read on here all the time about MS'ers missing or losing their purchase receipts.
This was the type of machine where it asked if you wanted a receipt instead of automatically printing it. That means the customer had to make a conscious choice to ask for the receipt.

Well I'm not being argumentative, (really I'm not) but I often just put 2 or 3 gallons of gas in my car if I need a little gas to get home, because I might not have the correct credit card with me to use our rewards and get 15-35 cents off per gallon, or I might not be near the station that gives me those rewards.
That being said, if it was a mystery shopper I hope he/she comes here and sees this. Very thoughtful of you.

My local grocery store runs a promotion where you can earn up to 30 free gallons of gas. My car holds 15 gallons. So when I have 30 free gallons coming, my cousin meets me at the gas station with gas containers and takes advantage of the other 15 gallons. The problem is coordinating our schedules. So once my tank is close to empty, I'll put in either 1 or 2 gallons at a time until we can get together. I have 30 gallons coming now, so I put in 2 gallons last night.
It could be anything.... someone filling up a gas can, someone pumping a small amount for whatever reason, someone topping off, using the last few dollars on a Visa/MC gift card, etc.

Very infrequently shopping the Greater Denver Area, Colorado Springs and in-between in Colorado these days.
It's the fact that the person had to get a receipt for the 2 gallons that lends credibility to the scenario.
I spent 5.11 yesterday, so it's not me!

Tons of broke non-teens and students put in $5 at a time too. Working single mother who needs to drive the 3 miles to work and back this week and has a tight budget. I could come up with 10 of those off the top of my head. I don't think many of you realize that pumping $5 worth of gas is absolutely not a tip off. It's when you do it dressed in business casual that it looks stupid.

Tons of broke non-teens and students put in $5 at a time too. Working single mother who needs to drive the 3 miles to work and back this week and has a tight budget. I could come up with 10 of those off the top of my head. I don't think many of you realize that pumping $5 worth of gas is absolutely not a tip off. As has been said here already it may have been a gas can fill up, a rental car top off. A few gallons to get to a cheaper gas station. Or Maybe it was mine and I left it on purpose as I saw you pulling in behind me.
Shopping Western NY, Northeast and Central PA, and parts of Ohio and West Virginia. Have car will travel anywhere if the monies right.
Very funny Buffalo. But there was a 3-hour time lapse from the receipt to when I arrived. I am actually surprised that no one else used that pump in that time frame. The gas station was pretty busy when I was there.

I have a hybrid and can go 80 miles on 2 gallons. If I end up at the pump on fumes and it's a high-priced station, I'll stick in a gallon or two and go find cheaper gas elsewhere.

I live in a state where the taxes on gas are high and the neighboring state is always around 30 cents cheaper.
I once ran out of gas because I didn't stop and get one gallon and was shooting for the first exit over the border. AAA gave me one gallon and said he has this happen at least once a day on this small stretch of highway.

I always try to fill up at Kroger because I get a $1/gallon discount. Sometimes, I'm too far from Kroger to get there, so I add a couple of dollars just for peace of mind.
Here's a scenario for you: I'm doing a gas station shop today and driving a 100% electric car! I'll be taking a gas can for the snow thrower.
