I received a 9. Why?
You received a 9 because:
No report is perfect.
You added a comma where one wasn't necessary.
You used the word 'that' seven times, five times it was not necessary to use that word at all.
The editor gave out all of her/his allotted '10' for the day
It was raining out
It was sunny out
Who knows? Don't allow these numbers to have any affect on you, the name of the game is submitting a good report and getting paid all the while remaining anonymous.

Most editors are paid by the report and it's only a few bucks. They are not going to tutor you in their personal idiosyncrasies for free. That's why they don't give constructive feedback.
(A few will now and then but it's rare.)
Even if they told you what word you misused or punctuation you missed, you will still be human and will make the same mistakes now and then in the future.
Don't sweat it. 9's are good. If you're in this for the praise, find another career. Most of us are in it for money, and as long as the editor's whims don't cut into our pay, we just go on to the next shop and don't look back.

Thanks, everyone. I'm not in this for the praise, but if I can improve I would like to know how. The nine isn't keeping me up at night. I know I write thorough and accurate reports.

If you want to get a better handle on the grade, research the company. Some hold on to 10's like they're money. Some good points were made before. We are not infallible and neither are the editors. Most companies will not provide useful feedback to help you improve. If you write well just use a spell and grammar checker, submit and be done with it. Proofing your work 15 times will end up being just a waste of time and cut into your bottom line. If you regularly receive grades of 8 to 10 it is all good.

It's very good advice because praise from MSC's is a rare thing. So if that's why someone works, this is not the place to do it.

Yes, I read what you were responding to. It had a hateful tone to it. The main theme of this forum is to assist Shoppers, be supportive and answer questions. Praise from a MSC is not a rare thing. It probably is in your case...

Looking at it another way, if we're being paid for 8's & 9's and receive plenty of repeat assignments, why strive for the 10? I want to give each MSC everything they need to submit a quality report but no more than that. I know my pay isn't increasing for having a "perfect report".
While it's great to get an "A," Bs and Cs are not bad grades. Students who make Bs and Cs graduate, too, just as those who make 8s and 9s on their reports get paid the same as those who make 10s. I love making 10s, too. Just saying.

The 9 or 10 does not make any difference. We would all like 10s, but have found out that it just doesn't matter. It bothered me the first year of Mystery shopping, you learn it just doesn't matter to anyone else but you.
I remember a post here from a shopper who got dinged by an editor for writing, "Earl Grey Tea." They were dinged because the editor though "Grey" should be spelled "Gray". Normally I don't worry about things like that, but I would have fought that edit and taken it to higher authority as the Earl's name is indeed spelled "Grey".

I received a "7" on a 10 shop. It pissed me off (for about 2 minutes) and then I just moved on...

Most editors work from home. It could have been an interruption from fighting children or a really bad diaper change that placed the editor into a foul mood. I'm very happy with a nine personally.
The only time I might be concerned is if it was sent back for a missed question, or further explanation due to you contradicting your narrative with the check boxes above it. If you rush and put the right information in the narrative and somehow tick the box wrong. This is the type of error you need to be concerned about.
