I received a 9. Why?

There is a balance it seems in working for MSCs. You can do everything to be rated the very best shopper they have with reports, Hero Citations etc. And you can also look at it from the other side; I got a 7. Did the check/deposit come through? Cool. Hero Citation? Can't buy gas with it, so what. You obviously want to give you best, is it worth doing extra work to get the 'gold star'? It's up to you.

I really don't care about the grades. I just think sometimes the editor is having a bad day. Just remember to enjoy your work and its all about the "MONEY." winking smiley I finally quit the mystery shopping side of the business and now I just do audits. I really enjoy the field audits. Better pay and less of the criticism. I have learned a lot doing these audits and have met a lot of great people this way. The pay for this type of audit is between $15 and $25. Hey I have even learned how to draw property sketches. Girls can learn how to measure properly! It took me some time and hard work, but it has paid off for me. I earn anywhere from $50 to $70 doing this type of project. So go with what is best for you and remember "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff."
Usually, when I get a 9, it is because my report is a couple of hours late. 26 hours instead of 24 hours. Five days later, the editor reads it. Whatever. I could care less.

I have clients that require reports to be in and edited within a specific amount of time. They are edited immediately and finalized within 72 hours. I am never late on those.

Oh, Marketforce... not late on those.
If the report is honest, objective, up to or exceeding company standards,timely and your best work that is a 10. Trippin' on this stuff is not worth it. Get paid and move on to the next opportunity!
some companies want you to write out numbers like "ten" others want you to use numerals like "10" and if you do it the wrong way....it lowers the score...

both companies insist that their way is the best and most professional....
I am going to give this thread an 8. Whoops, I mean an eight. Spellcheck wants to know if I actually mean an ate or did I mean argument or did I mean guilty? My other spellcheck choice is ever. I do not think spellcheck knows how to spell at all. I am not going to explain my 8 but I did read the entire thread.
I get it. Makes me crazy if I don't end up with perfect scores. I will admit I refuse to take a shop which only requires I walk across the street, because I can't get past the editor.

When I contacted the editor to find out what was wrong. The answer given wasn't correct. I always save copies of my reports. I stupidly tried to fight it and the next month I received the lowest score ever for any of my reports. I decided I didn't need the $7.

I strive to do my best for all my shops. If I get less than perfect for scores, I try to shake it off. I do reread my reports to try to figure out what I did wrong.

The other day I was lucky enough to be sitting next to a retired English teacher. I offered up a sample. She pointed out all the grammatical errors I've always made. Then she gave me some insight how to quit repeating the same mistakes.

She also admitted, sometimes it comes down to your writing style. Written English is governed by grammar but it's also subjective. When I asked how to get past the subjective? Her answer was get transferred to a different professor.

My advice is shake it off. 9 is a great score.

I was really enjoying the hissy-fit over the scores, but let me get serious by saying don't get serious over an objective observation that really doesn't mean diddly-squat. Take the money and run...You want annoying? Have your report rejected because you "didn't detail from beginning to end" what was said during the RECORDED PHONE CALL!!!!!!
I totally agree in wanting to know why you got a 9. I'm the same way. I take pride in my work and want to know what mistakes I've made so I can improve. It's not about praise, it's about improvement.

Exactly!!! How do they expect us to improve (for them too) if we don't know what we did wrong? I really hope some scheduler willsee this & do something about it.

I used to be one of those people who always wanted a perfect score until I had a boss who was abusive and would not be pleased with my work no matter what. She would tell me she was pleased with the work, and then she would tell all of my co-workers that I was doing an awful job. She did the same thing to all of the workers, so I wasn't alone in this.

I don't know anything about the editor who gave you a 9, but it could be that some editors never give a 10. The boss I am writing about above never gave anything above a 6 on performance appraisals to anybody because she believed that there was no one would could do above a 6 at the job. It didn't matter how many times I asked for feedback, constructive or otherwise, a 6 was as high as she was willing to give ever.

Why did you get a 9? Only the editor knows, and it may have more to do with him or her than with your report.

Most MSing editors get paid diddly squat and get paid per editing job. These are not salaried editors at a magazine or newspaper. They do not have time to give personalized advice on every report. They do not get paid to help us improve our writing skills. There are many online and offline resources for you to seek out for the help you want.
The rare times editors are salaried employees they will try to coach someone. Off hand Shoppers Critique, the old Feedback Plus and Mercantile have actually called me to discuss reports and offer insight for improvement. Granted, for each company it was only once. I wouldn't have expected them to continue for long. It is probably done for shoppers with fairly solid reports already.

An eight is great, a nine is fine...I don't know what to say about a ten.

I did two pizza shops for a certain Intelligent shopping company recently--one shop was for a one or two topping pizza and the other was for a cheese pizza, to be conducted at the same time and at the same location, yet there were two separate reports. Since the shops were conducted at the same time/same place, I copied and pasted the narrative from the first shop report into the second shop report. Identical narrative that was exactly the same--different editors for each report. One gave me a 10 and the other gave me an 8 (for grammatical errors). LOL! It's funny that one editor thought the narrative was perfect and the other didn't. It used to bother me when I got 8s and 9s and I would wonder exactly what errors I made so that I could do better; I would email the editors back and ask, but the replies were usually pretty vague because they had done a few or several more edits since they edited mine and they couldn't remember exactly why or what I did that could have been improved (if they responded back at all). Editors are not always perfect (even when your report actually was). As many other shoppers have pointed out in various other threads, as long as we get paid, we shouldn't let it bother us.

I have also learned a lot from an ACL editor. She called to clarify a simple question that turned out to be an error in the guidelines. I much appreciated the call and the clarification. She didn't have to do that and I know all don't. That is one of the reasons I like doing shops for ACL.
Some MSC's are helpful, but they seem to be the smaller ones, probably ones where the owner of the MSC is involved in the operation. the bigger they are, it seems the less likely they are to explain anything to a shopper.

I think that the better the report, the more opportunities you will have. If a scheduler is offering a job the person that more often than not gets 10's would probably get the job before the person that more often than not gets 7's imo.

I don't always get a 10 but I always strive for one. :-)

Some MSCs hand out 10s like candy, others not so much. I like the positive feedback, but I believe the post about not taking it personally and moving on is a good way to be. Recently I got a low grade and comments were included about my sentance structure and a punctuation error (all my fault.) The final comment was "great job, keep up the good work!" which amused me. I have moved on. Hope you are having a great weekend!

I got a 9 from an editor who previously gave me 10s, and one time left me this comment: "You're entire report was fabulous. Thank you." So I am being edited, judged and scored by someone who does not know the difference between a contraction and a possessive pronoun. Go figure!
