Micro Center "Thank You" evaluation

I do apologize if this is a stupid question, but I'm fairly new at this and still trying to figure out the reasoning behind some of these shops. For the Micro Center shop I'm referring to, you buy a cheap laptop and report whether the salesperson who sells it to you brings a manager over to thank you personally.

The thank you I received was over-the-top and insincere enough that I realized it probably wasn't any kind of attempt at friendliness or personalized service. Am I correct in thinking the idea here is for the manager to get a good look at your face in case you turn out to be a shoplifter or an identity thief?

Their policy is to have a manager thank every customer who buys a computer. I have done mystery shops and audits there, as well as having been a customer. They are supposed to do it. They sell far more computers than they could ever have mystery shoppers. Whether the thank you is sincere or not is a different matter. They have multiple managers on duty at any given time, so I don't think that it is meant to foil shoplifters. They do not even let you touch the computer box until you have paid for it, so I can't see how one could be shoplifted (the computers on displays are alarmed), but of course I am an honest person, and locks do not really stop theives.

buy a laptop?

do you then have to return it (assuming you don't want it)? are there restocking fees?

I have seen these a number of times....but didn't pay much attention...the nearest one is abouta half hour away in an urban area where it could take longer than that to park!
Yes, you have to return the computer a certain amount of time later (the same day). No restocking fees. Micro Center is a class act. I am greeted warmly and thanked when I do audits there, even when there is something wrong. I doubt that I would ever again be allowed to do a mystery shop in the store near me, but I would not be concerned at all about returning the computer. I have seen what I think are regular customers doing it. Maybe I will ask to do one in the store near where my son goes to college.
