Geoverify Error

I've noticed that a lot of my shops ask for the Geoverify code. For the ones that ask for it, I include the code.

The small print on the reports suggests that those who use Geoverify will get preference over those who don't and it doesn't take more than 20-30 seconds to run the app and email it to myself, plus it gives me a start time for my shop.

After 6 months of using the app, I had the automatic proofing of the report when I submit it say that the geoverify code was 3.2 miles from my assigned location. This is the first time this has happened. Has anyone had this come up before?

The report was accepted without being sent back by the editor.

There is one place where I perform audits twice a month. For some reason, GeoVerify says that I am over 5 miles away. It places me correctly on the map when it locates me, so I assume that there is an issue with how it eventually interprets the postal mailing address. I have not had any problems with that. Generally GeoVerify works well for me, unless I am inside a mall. So I wait until I am outside and then sometimes it is off by a 1/4 mile or more for a sprawling mall. No big deal.

I'm not sure about that preference thing. I've never used it and get most of the shops applied for.

Hi wintersilke and others,

There are a couple of things that can cause your GeoVerify code to be off. The first is if the GeoVerify app doesn't get an accurate location. This most often happens if you're on a wifi network and your phone uses that to get a location -- sometimes it's dead on, but sometimes it can be significantly off, because it's using an approximation based on what the internet knows (or thinks it knows) about the location of the router you're connected to. You may have noticed this sometimes if you're using a website with a "find a store location near me" feature from your home computer -- sometimes when I do this, it places me more than thirty miles away from my home!

If this happens with GeoVerify, you will notice that the map pin in the GeoVerify app itself is way off. To avoid the problem, first check that map pin to make sure it looks right, and if it doesn't, turn off wifi on your device and start over (to try and force your device to use GPS, or at least, cell tower triangulation).

The other thing that can cause your code to be reported as too far away when you enter it in SASSIE is if the location in SASSIE is incorrect or inaccurate (myst4au, this sounds like what you're seeing). This happens if there's a typo in the location information, if the zip code is missing or mangled...any number of different reasons. When your shop is reviewed by a scheduler, they have the option to pull up a map and see where the shop location is and where your GeoVerify location was. At that point, they should notice that their location is wrong, but if you see a discrepancy when entering your report, I'd suggest bringing it to their attention so that they can correct the location address.
