"Did they start a tab?"

Hi all,

I have a quick question on bar tabs. When a report asks if the bartender requested payment or started a tab, does simply placing a chit in front of you count as "starting a tab" or do they need to specifically request a credit card?

Thanks!

If they don't ask you to pay as you go, they have started a tab.

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

Most places nowadays place a copy of your receipt in a snifter in front of you, and update it every time you order something else. That receipt is your tab.

While none of the places we go produce a receipt until we decline further new drinks, yet we are still on a tab because they enter the drinks in the computer as we go along. Methodologies obviously vary, but LisaSTL is correct, if they aren't immediately asking for payment they have 'started a tab'.
