Any advice would be helpful.

If you do a search of the forum for on line shops you will find a mixed bag of experiences. Many of the 'online' shops are scams that want you to sign up for a lot of 'free trial' or 'free estimate' type things that it is then left to you to unwind so your credit card is not charged at the end of the trial offer and deal with the phone contacts since you are now a hot prospect. While someone mentioned that the scammer receives $20 for each of these 'referrals', quite often you will receive nothing but a requirement to do still more signups. Be very cautious. This is NOT what mystery shopping is about.
I too am brand new to this site and forum and I don't know who(0r if) they sponsor or who sponsors them, but a good place to start for legit companies to work for is www.volition.com. You will find all kinds of companies there. That's where I started and it doesn't cost 1 penny to start. Just sign up and go. You can always come back to this forum and others to fine tune, but if you want to get started ASAP go there. I signed up for about 20 companies on May 31 and was working on June 3rd. It may not work that way for everyone, but it can be really, really quick. Check it out and let me know what you think.
There is a list of legitimate companies here as the first post of the first thread in the Mystery Shopping Company Discussion section. There are also lists at Volition.com, the MSPA's website (of their members) and many other places. Volition.com is an excellent place to research companies but not a very good place to ask newbie questions.
Yes, Total Research Solutions has been around quite a while and there are few complaints. One issue with them is that the few jobs they have you only get to do once because you can never repeat the 'free trial offer' again.
