Tips for Newbies?

First of all, thanks to Jacob for setting up this forum. It's very informative and very helpful.

I've been considering going into mystery shopping for quite a while now. I'm hoping some of you could answer a few questions:
- do you need to register your own business name before you start MS?
- how do you get rated? (I've noticed some schedulers requiring a rating of at least 5.)
- what's your best tip to start on a first assignment?

Thanks to everyone. Looking forward to hearing from all you great folks.

Best regards.

Bong, to be honest I screwed up on a few. I emailed them, they forgave. T
he best advise is 'practice makes perfect.' I know paying attention to detail is very, very important. I was a nurse for 33 years so that comes easily for me. I memorize every detail upon entering the door. Signs, prices, details about the people, glasses, that confounded bump on their nose!
Start slow, easy jobs. For God's sake do not do a McDonald's at first. There is detail, then there is perfect. That is Mcd's shop. If your memory isn't good, mystery shopping isn't for you. (a small scrap of paper for names is good as long as you are discrete) I have never been pegged a shopper unless it was a reveal shop. Even then they never knew until I told them.
Next tip: Always print out and read paperwork in advance! You cannot print and read on your way. I have found that most companies have the same policies at all times, but I read the new ones too, they do change often some monthly!
Some companies have you upload receipts, your CPI,(Contract) one seperate one for each job), and/or photos (digital of course). But job requirements for some companies are the same for the whole month, thus saving printouts to 1 monthly, the next month it may/maynot change.
Hope this helps!

Keep smilin'
Your advice is very much appreciated, Alice. Do I take it that you didn't have to register a business name before you started? You just had to sign up at various MS companies' websites?

Thanks again. Have a good day.

Bong
Bong,
Jacob has put names of companies on his site, I use CRI, no problems, Checkmark, ShopnCheck, Sassie to name a few. I paid shadow shopper 9.95 for trial period, I feel it was worth the money. If you will sign up with all the companies you can, you will get enough jobs to keep you busy.
I just registered with my name, address, you don't need a business. If you are going to try to do this to make a living, I couldn't in my small town. Maybe New York, La. Heck even Memphis has tons, too far for me to travel.
I did sign up at the websites, they are rather lengthly to set up each account. Jacobs tips helped me to know how/what/when to say and do.
Hope this helps.

Bong, this is 2 pages of sites you can sign up with. There is no way you can tell by looking the good vs bad. I have lots saved in my favorites, email me for names I have registered with. But, alas the same companies are not all the same in different areas.
I have actually signed up with 25 or more companies, all I use are 6, the importance of signing with many companies. One shopper said that the good one was Dsg, another NSS. I have been registered with both over a yr, nothing, nada!
I think that different companies are in different areas of the country. For instance Gapbusters, I do Mcdonald's, but on Gapbusters my state will not come up. I do them for Shopnchek or CRI (I forget!)
Email me, I will send you what I have agw505@bellsouth.net
Put "from bong" in the subject line, I weed out all those emails wanting me to 'get rich quick' schemes.
